Musketeers remain undefeated, head to Pitt on Sunday

MUNCIE, Ind. - After falling behind for the first time in 2016, the Xavier women's soccer team responded quickly, matching Ball State less than three minutes later and holding the Cardinals without another goal through double-overtime to earn a 1-1 draw. The result moves the Musketeers to 2-0-1 on the season, marking the first time Xavier has been undefeated through three games since 2013.

DOSS DOES IT AGAIN ON OFFENSE

After falling behind at the 81:44 mark, the Musketeers answered almost immediately with an equalizer from Tori Doss. In the 83rd minute Samantha Dewey passed the ball into the box a and Doss finished it to bring Xavier back to a draw 1-1, with less than 10 minutes to play.

Doss' goal marked her second of the season. Dewey's assist was the second for her this season as well. Doss led the Musketeers with four total shots, including three on-goal. Kenadie Carlson and Carly Alfano found good looks at the goal as well.

XAVIER DEFENSE

The Musketeers held Ball State scoreless for over 80 minutes before BSU's Leah Mattingly scored off a corner kick to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute.

Xavier's defense limited the Ball State offense that came into the game averaging 3.5 goals per game to just one score. Goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected five saves in regulation to keep the Musketeers knotted up with the Cardinals, then grabbed another four saves in overtime to finishing with nine saves in 110 minutes. The BSU goal is the only tally Piccus has given up in 290 minutes of action this season.

Maddie Tierney and Carly Alfano each played over 100 minutes in the backfield for the Musketeers, helping hold BSU to only one goal while also helping the offense create pressure, with each taking a shot for Xavier.

"That was a really good result for us on the road, against possibly the best team in the MAC. I thought we were very sharp the first 25 minutes, then the game changed a little bit and Ball State did what they do best, which is throw a lot of numbers at you and attack very well. We gave up a goal on a questionable set piece, but responded well, equalizing the game. Overall, it was an exciting game for both sides to watch and I thought we really competed well. Now, we're looking forward to Pittsburgh on Sunday."
