08.27.16 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer (2-0-1) stays on the road for a third straight match, heading to ACC opponent Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers (0-2-1) for a Sunday afternoon match. First touch is set for 1:00 p.m. The match can be viewed online through WatchESPN.
Â
•  The Panthers com into the game looking for the first win of the season after falling to 0-2-1 on Thursday with a narrow loss against Colorado College. The Panthers fell behind 1-0 in the 28th minute of the match and a late flurry for Pitt fell short, after two shots on goal in the 87th minute were collected for saves.
•  Pitt's lone result of the season was a 2-2 double overtime draw at Michigan. Against the Wolverines, freshmen Alex Wright and Alli Higgs scored the first goals of their careers after UM took the 1-0 lead in the first half. After Pitt took the 2-1 lead in the second, Michigan responded in the 89th minute to force overtime.
• Pittsburgh also faced off with Duquesne, falling 2-0 in its home opener despite outshooting the Dukes 19-10.
Â
• Sunday's match is the third between the two schools, dating back to 2007. Xavier trails the series 0-2-0, with the last match-up coming in 2009, when the Musketeers fell 3-0 to the Panthers in Cincinnati.
Â
•   Xavier played Ball State to a 1-1 draw through double overtime on Friday night to remain undefeated. This marks the first the program has started the season without a loss through three games since 2013.
•  After falling behind at the 81:44 mark, the Musketeers answered almost immediately with an equalizer from Tori Doss. In the 83rd minute Samantha Dewey passed the ball into the box and Doss finished it to bring Xavier back to a draw, 1-1, with less than 10 minutes to play. Doss' goal marked her second of the season.
•  Xavier's defense limited a Ball State offense that came into the game averaging 3.5 goals per game to just one score. Goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected five saves in regulation to keep the Musketeers knotted up with the Cardinals, then grabbed another four saves in overtime, finishing with nine saves in 110 minutes. The BSU goal is the only tally Piccus has given up in 290 minutes of action this season.
Â
• Rachel Piccus earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week earlier this week after posting a pair of complete game shutouts during the opening weekend. Piccus collected three saves during both the Evansville and EKU matches to pick up the 11th and 12th wins of her career, with nine of those now being complete-game shutouts. This marks the second time in Piccus' career she's been honored as the Goalkeeper of the Week by the BIG EAST.
• Junior midfielder Maddie Tierney also picked up recognition from the conference, earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after leading the Musketeers with three total points over the weekend. Against Evansville, Tierney scored on a penalty kick in the 35th minute to put the Musketeers up 2-0, then picked up a third point after assisting on Tori Doss' game winner at EKU.
Â
•  Xavier closes out its road trip with a familiar foe, facing off with old Atlantic 10 rival Dayton. The trip up I75 marks the first time the two programs have matched up since the Musketeers joined the BIG EAST in 2013. XU and UD are set to face off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2. Xavier will then return home to host NKU on Sept. 6.
