Musketeers Drop Dayton Invitational Opener to Flyers

Dayton defeats Xavier in four sets on Friday night
DAYTON, Ohio - Xavier volleyball dropped its opening match of the Dayton Invitational on Friday night, falling to the host Flyers in four sets (22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 16-25).

The Musketeers move to 2-2 on the year, while the Flyers improve to 5-0. Xavier has now lost seven straight to Dayton.

• Abbey Bessler posted a match-high 17 kills, tying Dayton's Jessica Sloan who also had 17 kills. The two outside hitters were the only players who had 10 or more kills on the night.

• Kristen Massa was one kill shy of recording her second consecutive match with 10 or more kills as the junior finished with nine.

• Meredith Klare had a team-high 12 digs in the loss. It marked the first time this season that the libero did not post the match high in digs.

• Xavier had three more total blocks (12-9) than the Flyers. Alexis Newsome led the Musketeers with nine total blocks (7 assists, 2 solo).

• Mackenzi Humm dished out a team-high 23 assists, while McKena Estes added 19.

• Xavier had its largest lead of the set, 20-16, before the Flyers went on a 9-2 run to win the frame. Neither team led by more than four points in the set.

• Kristen Massa had a team-high four kills and hit .429, while Meredith Klare added six digs. Xavier hit .258, while Dayton posted a .265 attack percentage.

• Dayton led by as many as seven, 19-12, before the Musketeers used a 6-1 run capped by an Alexis Newsome kill to get within two. Xavier would get within two, 24-22, down the stretch on a block from Laura Grossman and Newsome before a Jessica Sloan kill sealed the Dayton win.

• Xavier never trailed in the third set and led by as many as 10, 23-13. The Musketeers held Dayton to a -.065 hitting percentage in the frame.
