SUMMER WRAP-UP: Musketeers Star in Several Leagues

Lowther, Schilling named Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-Americans
CINCINNATI – Xavier baseball returners Garrett Schilling and Zac Lowther were named Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-Americans, while Chris Givin won a batting title as several Musketeers stood out across college baseball summer leagues in 2016.
Among many highlights, Schilling and Lowther's dominance were particularly impressive. Schilling set a franchise record for saves and won a championship with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, while Lowther led the prestigious Cape Cod League in strikeouts.
Givin raked his was to a batting title with a .383 mark to lead the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, also capturing a division championship and league title as a member of the Amsterdam Mohawks (NY).
In total, 22 Musketeers wrapped up summer ball in the past few weeks. Seven were named all-stars in their respective leagues.

• Chris Givin was named an all-star, while winning a championship with the Amsterdam Mohawks (NY) in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. He also claimed the PGCBL batting title after hitting at a .383 clip over 133 regular season AB's. The returning sophomore swatted two homers, stole 11 bases and knocked in 21 runs in 42 games overall. Givin led the Mohawks to a a 34-15 (.694) regular season record and was named to a list of the top-25 pro prospects in the league following the season. A number of future pros have played for the eight-time league champion Mohawks, including current San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence.
• Rylan Bannon batted .355 with three homers and 27 RBI in 38 games for the Savannah Bananas as part of the Coastal Plain League. He also worked an impressive 34 walks to sport a .509 on-base percentage.
• Roger Danison was named an all-star for the Cincinnati Steam in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, reaching the playoffs and batting .321 overall with a pair of homers in 36 games total.
• Stephen Haring was an all-star in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League and finished the year batting .232 with two homers and 12 RBI for the Riverhead Tomcats.
• Matt Fallon played in 38 games and batted .304 with 15 steals for the Champion City Kings in Springfield, Ohio.
• Sam Flamini played in 37 games for the Allentown Railers in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, batting .277 with a homer and 24 RBI.
• Joe Gellenbeck hit .261 with four homers and 23 RBI in 48 games for the Thunder Bay Border Cats in the Northwoods League.

• Brad Kirschner posted a 2.61 ERA in 41.1 innings for the Cincinnati Steam, earning all-star honors and reaching the playoffs in the GLSCL. The lefty struck out 35 and walked just seven in eight appearances (seven starts).
• Garrett Schilling had a lights-out summer as the closer for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in the Northwoods League. A league all-star and Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-American, Schilling set a Rapids Rafters record with 18 saves in 29 appearances. The returning junior struck out 45 strikeouts in 31 total innings pitched, winning a league title and being named the Rapids Rafters' Pitcher of the Year. An 18-team organization, the Northwoods League has produced more than 140 future MLB players. That list includes names like Max Scherzer, Chris Sale, Jordan Zimmerman, Curtis Granderson and Ben Zobrist.
• Damien Richard was also named an all-star for the Rafters in the Northwoods League, posting a 2.38 ERA in 22.2 innings to go with 25 strikeouts.
• Trent Astle turned in a 2.60 ERA with a 3-2 record in nine starts for the Valley Blue Sox, reaching the playoffs and striking out 27 in 45 innings of work. He was named the Collegiate Baseball National Pitcher of the Week in late July.
• Zac Lowther was named a Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-American and also earned a spot on the Cape Cod All-League Team after a breakout summer with the Brewster Whitecaps. The returning junior led his league with 54 strikeouts in 35.2 innings, posting a 2.52 ERA in 11 games (four starts). As of 2015, 292 former Cape Cod League players are active on MLB rosters.
• Jason Hall did not allow an earned run in 17.2 innings for the Licking County Settlers, striking out 31 and allowing just eight hits in nine appearances.
• Taylor Williams pitched 19.2 innings over 11 appearances for the Worcester Bravehearts, reaching the playoffs and recording a 3.66 ERA to go with 15 strikeouts.
• Greg Jacknewitz tossed 25.1 innings, recording a 4.62 ERA and 26 strikeouts for the Valley Blue Sox in the NECBL.Â
