Recap: Women's Tennis at the Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio – The Xavier Women's Tennis team participated at the Miami Invitational last weekend, along with the teams of Purdue, Louisville and Miami (Ohio).
On Friday, the Musketeers played singles matches against Purdue and doubles matches against Miami (Ohio). Notable performers from singles play included Lauren Ghidotti at No. 1 singles, winning her match after dropping the first set (3-6, 6-3, 6-0) and Lauren Fitz-Randolph, who won her match at No. 5 singles (6-4, 2-6, 6-0). In the doubles matches against Miami (Ohio), the duo of Lauren Ghidotti/Sophia Abelson won their match (6-1) and Elizabeth Bagerbaseh/Rachael Reichenbach won their match (6-2).
On Saturday, Xavier started with singles matches against Louisville and ended with doubles matches against Purdue. In singles play, Elizabeth Bagerbaseh won her match at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-2) and Kaitlin Ruether won her match at No. 7 singles (6-2, 6-2). In the doubles matches, the Musketeers competed hard but fell in all three matches to Purdue.
On Sunday, the Musketeers started the day with doubles matches against Louisville and finished with singles matches against Miami (Ohio). In doubles play, the duo of Lauren Ghidotti/Sophia Abelson won their match (6-4). In the other two matches both Musketeer duos forced Louisville to seven games but the Cardinals came away with the win. In singles play, Sophia Abelson, Rachael Reichenbach and Zoe Manion all won their matches. Abelson won (6-1, 6-1) while Reichenbach and Manion went three sets. Rachael Reichenbach won her match (6-7, 6-4, 7-6) as did Zoe Manion (4-6, 6-3, 6-1).
I asked Coach Doug Matthews what were some takeaways he had from this weekend, "Overall, it was an up and down weekend for our team. There were moments that I was proud of how we competed. But there wasn't consistent energy and execution. We made some poor choices in tight spots at the end of sets. These are things that we pride ourselves on as a team so it was disappointing that we didn't have a complete effort there. We know what to work on in practice leading up to the regional."
All Musketeers that competed came away with a win in singles play in the invitational. In doubles play, Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson finished with a 2-1 record at No. 1 doubles. The Musketeers will be in action on Oct. 12– 16 at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship.
