Swimming Closes Out Fall Schedule at CSU Magnus Cup

Three-day meet opens Friday morning, continues through Sunday
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's and women's swimming close out the fall schedule this weekend, traveling to Cleveland to take part in the sixth annual Cleveland State University Magnus Cup. The Musketeer women will face off against 14 other squads, while the men will be one of ten teams competing during the three-day competition.

- Prelims each day are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. Finals sessions for Friday and Saturday will begin at 5:00 p.m., while Sunday's finals will begin at 3:00 p.m.Â
 - An all-weekend ticket for the Magnus Cup will be $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children. An all-day ticket will be $7 for adults and $5 for seniors or children. Heat sheets will be available for $2 per session.

- In each racing event, the women will compete first, followed by the men.
 - The top 40 swimmers will advance into A, B, C and D finals. However, only the top 20 will score in each event.

			Â 2016 MAGNUS CUPÂ (WOMEN) | 
- Last season, Xavier's women finished third of 14 teams with 884 points.
 - Xavier's women started the meet with a new school record in the 200 free relay. Emily Conners, Paxtyn Drew, Tianna Vozar and Caroline Gaertner took second with a time of 1:33.17 which shaved over half a second off the previous record of 1:33.74.
 - Caroline Gaertner followed that up with a then-school-record performance in the 50 free, touching the wall in 23.32 to break the previous mark of 23.56 held by Paxtyn Drew.Â
 - The women closed the first day with another relay record, with Paxtyn Drew, Titterton, Gaertner and Conners touching the wall in 3:47.32.
 - On the second day, Caroline Gaertner became the second women in Xavier history to set an NCAA B-Cut time, hitting the standard and setting a new school record in the 100 back. Gaertner joins teammate Paxtyn Drew who hit the B-Cut standard for the 100 back and 200 back at last year's BIG EAST Championship.
 - Gaertner also set a new school record during prelims with a time of 54.55 in the 100 fly, a time that was just .06 off the NCAA B-Cut standard. In finals for the event, she finished third with a time of 54.61.
 - On the final day, Caroline Gaertner led a trio of Musketeers who finished in the top five in the 200 back, placing third with a time of 2:00.58. Ali Fort and Paxtyn Drew finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
 - Ali Fort finished second in the 50 back with a time of 26.17. Paxtyn Drew also finished in the top five with a time of 26.61.
 - The Xavier women closed out the event with a third place finish in the 400 free relay.

			Â 2016 MAGNUS CUP (MEN) | 
- At last season's meet, Xavier finished second behind host Cleveland State with 1320.5 points, scoring more than 500 points more than third place George Washington
 - Xavier's men opened the meet by taking second in the 200 free relay.
 - Alex Wolfred collected the first win of the meet for the Musketeers in the 500 free with a time of 4:34.66.
 - On Saturday, Sam Johanns took the top spot in the 100 back with a time of 50.33.
 - Alex Wolfred qualified first in the 200 free with at time of 1:42.13 before finishing fifth in the A Final heat.
 - On Sunday, the Xavier men went 1-2-3 in the 50 fly, led in by Knox Hitt's time of 22.33. David Bunnell and Brandon Abboud finished second and third, respectively. All told, the Musketeers accounted for five of the 10 spots in the A Final.
 - Sam Johanns took second in the 50 back, one of five Musketeers in the top 10 times of the event, including Nathan Runyon who posted the top time in the B Final.
 - The Xavier A team of Johanns, Hitt, Enrique Hernandez and Rodrigo Surianofinished second in the 400 free relay to close the event.

			Â LAST TIME OUT (WOMEN) | 
- The Musketeers were last in action two weeks ago at Denison. Xavier took the top spot in six events on the women's side.
 - Emma Kauffeld collected a pair of first place finishes, taking the top spot in the mile and in the 400 IM. Her time in the 1,650 free is the top time by a BIG EAST competitor this season.
 - Paxtyn Drew took first in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:55.19.
 - Caroline Gaertner took the top spot in the 100 fly, and also collected a top-two finish in the 100 back, taking second.
 - Taylor Hogan took first in the 200 fly with the fastest time in the even this season among BIG EAST competitors, aside from her own school record at Butler.
 - Emily Conners took first in the 100 free with a time of 52.78.
 - Xavier closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay with the second fastest time in the conference so far this season for Conners, Abby Garner, Paxtyn Drew and Caroline Gaertner.
 - Denison took the win, 145-117, on the women's side.

- The Xavier men also faced off with the Dukes two weeks ago.
 - Matthew Dyer took the top spot in the 200 breast, and also collected a second-place finish in the 100 breast.
 - Nick Mahoney set the top time in the BIG EAST in the mile so far this season, taking second with a time of 16:27.42.
 - Landon Clark's time of 1:54.60 took second and was the fastest time by a Musketeer this season.
 - Chase Baldwin took second in the 200 back, touching the wall in 1:54.87. Baldwin was also the top Musketeer in the 400 IM.
 - Enrique Hernandez's time of 21.49 in the 50 free is the fastest time by a Musketeer this season, good for third.
 - Denison took the win, 171-86, on the men's side.

			Â UPCOMING SCHEDULE | 
- The Magnus Cup is the final full-squad meet of the Fall semester for the Musketeers. Qualifiers will compete in the AT&T Winter Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. from Nov. 29 through Dec. 2.
 - The entire squad will next be in action on Jan. 5, 2018, when Xavier travels to Indianapolis to face IUPUI with Ball State.
