The senior tandem combined for 32 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists
CINCINNATI - Senior tandem Anniina Äijänen and Jada Byrd combined for 32 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists on Wednesday night, leading the Musketeers to a 62-50 win over Fort Wayne.
Xavier improved to 4-1 on the year, while Fort Wayne dropped to 2-4.
• Xavier hit its first three shots to take an early 7-0 lead and force a Fort Wayne timeout. The Musketeers led from start to finish with the Mastodons only getting as close as one point, 19-18, with seven minutes left in the first half.
• Xavier closed the first half on a 13-9 run to take a 32-24 advantage into the locker room. Jada Byrd and A'riana Gray led the Musketeers with seven points each in the first half. Anniina Äijänen led Xavier with five rebounds as the Musketeers held a 20-18 advantage on the glass.
• An Anniina Äijänen three pointer to open the second half gave the Musketeers a double-figure lead they would never relinquish. Xavier led by as many as 18 points, 42-24, midway through the third quarter.
• Jada Byrd led Xavier with 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the second half.
• Jada Byrd scored a career-high 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting. She added a career-high six assists to go along with four rebounds and two steals.
• Anniina Äijänen matched her career-high in scoring with 13 points on 6-for-13 shooting. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
• A'riana Gray finished with nine points on 4-for-8 shooting to go along with five rebounds. Aly Reiff added a season-high seven points.
• Xavier posted a season-high 15 assists in the win. Fort Wayne held a 34-31 advantage on the glass, but the Musketeers pulled down a season-high 12 offensive rebounds.
• The Musketeers forced 17 turnovers, converting the miscues into 12 points. Xavier also held a 38-14 advantage in points in the paint. Defensively, Xavier held the Mastodons to a .377 field-goal percentage.
• Xavier returns to action on Monday, Dec. 4 against Wake Forest. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
