Musketeers Drop Game Two of Weekend Series at Southern Miss

Golden Eagles top Xavier, 2-0; even series at 1-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Xavier baseball dropped game two of the weekend series at Southern Miss, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon. The series is now tied, 1-1, after the Musketeers (7-8) defeated the Golden Eagles (10-4), by the same score on Friday night.Â
Southern Miss starter Hayden Roberts (1-1) shut down the Musketeer offense, throwing 8.2 innings of scoreless action. The junior right-handed pitcher only allowed two hits, while throwing eight strikeouts.
Roberts looked to throw a complete game before Nate Monastra collected a two-out single in the ninth inning to put runners on first and second base for the Musketeers. Nick Sandlin ended the comeback effort as the sophomore pitcher posted his first save of the season, striking out Nate Soria on the final at bat of the game.Â

• Southern Miss had six more hits (8-2) than Xavier and left five more runners on base (9-4). Xavier also committed one more error (3-2) than the Golden Eagles.Â
• Nate Soria had the first hit of the game for Xavier, a single through the left side in the second inning. The Musketeers were then held without a hit until Nate Monastra collected a two-out single in the ninth inning.Â
• Nate Soria has now reached base in all 15 games for the Musketeers.

• Garrett Schilling (1-2) was tagged with the loss despite a strong outing. The junior right-handed pitcher went six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned). He also threw three strikeouts.
