Women's Tennis Falls To Top Seed St. John's In BIG EAST Semifinals

CAYCE, S.C. --- The Xavier Musketeer women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 match to top-seeded St. John's in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.

St. John's jumped out to 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Junior Lauren Ghidotti evened the match at 1-1 with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.

The Red Storm took a 3-1 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 singles but the Musketeers didn't go down without a fight as two freshmen stepped up to record big wins to even the team score at 3-3. Freshman Vanina Iordanova won an exciting tiebreaker in her first set and went on to a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Fellow freshman Rachael Reichenbach recorded her second singles win of the championship with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 4, battling back from a 5-2 deficit in the second-set tiebreaker to clinch her victory.

Xavier sophomore Sophia Abelson lost her first set at No. 5 in the deciding singles match, 7-5, but battled back to win the second set 6-4. SJU won the final set 6-3, giving St. John's the team win.
