Tori Doss tallied to give XU early lead; Toni Bizzarro collected career-high 10 saves

DURHAM, N.C. – After allowing a pair of second-half goals, Xavier women's soccer fell, 3-1, to No. 12 Duke on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers move to 1-1 on the season.

Xavier struck first, but Duke responded quickly to set the game in a 1-1 draw for the remainder of the first half. Duke retook the lead on a penalty kick nearly 20 minutes in the second half and added an insurance goal in the closing seconds of the match.

HOW THEY SCORED

13' | Xavier | Maddie Tierney got the ball in the middle third of the field, passed ahead to Tori Doss on the breakaway. Doss beat the Duke defense down the field, getting behind the Duke goalkeeper for a look at an open net to put Xavier up 1-0.

16' | Duke | The Blue Devil's McCoy scored from the left side, just outside the six-yard box to tie the game 1-1.

73' | Duke | Duke's Chelsea Burns put the Blue Devils up for the first time on a penalty kick buried in the left corner of the net.

89' | Duke | Imani Dorsey brought the ball up the midfield for Duke in the final seconds of the game, scoring from the left side to set the final score at 3-1.

NOTABLE

Tori Doss' goal is her first of the season and the 14^th of her Xavier career. Doss finished with a pair of shots on the day.
The Blue Devils outshot the Musketeers 23-2, with 13 of those looks on-goal.
Toni Bizzarro collected a career-high 10 saves to keep the Musketeers within striking distance. The total tops her previous career high of five against Providence last season.
Carrie Lewis played the full 90 minutes at midfield.
Carly Alfano and Andie Kennard each played over 85 minutes as part of the Xavier backline.
Xavier returns home next Friday to host Ball State in the first of four-straight home games.

UP NEXT

The Musketeers return home the next weekend, hosting Ball State on Friday, August 25 at 4:30 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex. The match-up with the Cardinals is the first game of a double-header with men's soccer, who will face Loyola Chicago at 7:30 p.m.
Xavier remains home for its Sunday match, hosting Pittsburgh on Aug. 27 at 1:00 p.m. The game with the Panthers is also a double-header, with the Xavier men facing Drake at 5:00 p.m.
