Xavier opens the season with a 3-0 record
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Xavier volleyball captured the Hampton Inn Invitational Title on Saturday afternoon with a three-set win (25-20, 28-26, 25-20) over Bowling Green. The Musketeers move to 3-0 on the year following the win.
The two-day tournament was hosted by Bowling Green State University at the Stroh Center.
• Kristen Massa posted her first career double-double with 11 kills and a team-high 18 digs. The senior outside hitter added two blocks and two assists.
• Xavier held a 9-4 advantage in blocks with Alexis Newsome pacing the Musketeers with a match-high six blocks. The middle blocker added three kills.
• Morgan Finn added seven kills, while Maya Krause and Laura Grossman both added six.
• Mackenzi Humm posted a team-high 21 assists, while Nadia Dieudonne added 10. Defensively, Samantha Foti (16) and Meredith Klare (15) combined to record 31 digs.
• The all-time series with Bowling Green is now tied 3-3.
• The opening set had six ties before the Musketeers used a 10-3 run midway through the set to take their largest lead, 21-14. Xavier would eventually pull away for the 25-20 win.
• Kristen Massa had a team-leading five kills in the frame, while Alexis Newsome added three blocks. Lauren Frilling also had two aces.
• Xavier trailed by four (20-16) late in the match before scoring four unanswered points to tie the match. The two teams played into extra points until blocks from Alexis Newsome and Laura Grossman gave the Musketeers the 28-26 victory. All told, the set had seven lead changes and 12 ties.
