
Newsome Posts Season High in Kills, Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Georgia Tech

The middle blocker recorded 14 kills on Thursday night
ATLANTA – Xavier volleyball dropped its first match of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Thursday night, falling to the host Yellow Jackets in four sets (25-20, 25-27, 11-25, 17-25). The Musketeers moved to 4-4 on the year, while Georgia Tech improved to 3-5.
• Alexis Newsome posted a season-high 14 kills to go along with a .440 hitting percentage. The middle blocker was one kills shy of matching her career high (15 kills - at Illinois | Aug. 26, 2016).
• Kristen Massa matched Newsome with a team-high 14 kills. The senior outside hitter has recorded double-figure kills in all but one match this season. Massa added seven digs and two aces.
• Laura Grossman chipped in eight kills, while Maya Krause and Lauren Frilling added six kills. Frilling also had two blocks.
• Mackenzi Humm posted her third double-double of the season, posting a match-high 29 assists and 10 digs. Junior libero Meredith Klare added 10 digs.
• Xavier recorded two more aces (6-4) than Georgia Tech.
• Xavier led from start to finish in the set, leading by as many as five (22-17) down the stretch. A Kristen Massa block on the final play of the set sealed the 25-20 victory.
• Xavier hit .312 in the frame with Lauren Frilling leading the team in kills with four (4 K, 4 TA).
• The second set had 13 ties and six lead changes, with the final tie at 25. Back-to-back kills from Ashley Askin and Gabriela Stavnetchei on the final two plays of the set gave the Yellow Jackets the 27-25 win.
• Kristen Massa led Xavier with six kills in the set, while Meredith Klare had five digs.
• Georgia Tech took advantage of 13 Xavier attacking errors to win the set, 25-11.
• Xavier jumped out to an early 4-1 lead to force a Georgia Tech timeout. The Yellow Jackets responded by going on a 12-3 run to take a lead they would never relenquish. Alexis Newsome hit .667 with four kills to pace the Musketeers.
• The Musketeers continue Georgia Tech Invitational action on Friday at 11 a.m. against Kansas State. Xavier will also take on North Florida at 6 p.m.
