Senior guard J.P. Macura scored a season-high 27 points on Saturday afternoon
NEWARK, N.J. - Senior guard J.P. Macura scored a season-high 27 points on Saturday afternoon, leading the No. 11/12 Musketeers to a 73-64 BIG EAST road win at No. 19 Seton Hall.
The Musketeers (18-3, 6-2 BIG EAST) won their third straight game, while the Pirates (15-5, 4-3 BIG EAST) lost their first home game of the season.
• Xavier hit the first basket of the game and led the Pirates, 5-4, three minutes into the contest. Seton Hall responded with an 11-2 run on 5-for-7 shooting to take a 15-7 advantage with 14:07 on the clock.
• The Pirates led by as many as nine, 25-16, with 6:40 left in the half before a 6-0 Xavier run capped by a Tyrique Jones basket got the Musketeers within three (25-22). Xavier closed the stanza on a 5-2 run capped by a Kaiser Gates three pointer to make the score 35-30.
• J.P. Macura paced the Musketeers with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting, while Trevon Bluiett and Tyrique Jones both added six points. Jones also led the team on the glass with four rebounds. Seton Hall held a 21-15 advantage on the glass at the break.
• The second half featured eight lead changes and one tie. Seton Hall opened the half on a 7-2 run to take the game's first double-figure lead, 42-32. Xavier responded by using a 20-9 run on 8-for-14 shooting to take its first lead of the game, 52-51, at the 8:22 mark.
• A Khadeen Carrington basket with 4:24 left on regulation gave Seton Hall its final lead of the game, 59-58. The Xavier defense would shutdown the Pirates for the remainder of the game, liming the Pirates to 1-for-6 shooting down the stretch.
• Xavier closed the game on a 15-5 run on 3-for-5 shooting. The Musketeers sealed the win by going 8-for-9 from the charity stripe.
• J.P. Macura scored a game-high 27 points on 8-for-14 shooting with 18 points coming in the second half. The senior guard added five rebounds, three assists and one steal.
• Senior guard Trevon Bluiett added 15 points, five rebounds and two steals. Junior forward Kaiser Gates rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points on 3-for-6 shooting with all three baskets coming from behind the arc.
• Seton Hall won the battle on the glass, 38-36, with Angel Delgado pulling down a game-high 18 rebounds. Five different Musketeers grabbed five rebounds in the win.
• Xavier forced 18 turnovers, turning the miscues into 21 points. The Musketeers also had 21 second-chance points and held a 20-4 advantage in bench points.
• Xavier posted its fourth game of the year with 10 or more steals as the Musketeers collected 12. Tyrique Jones led Xavier with three steals.
• Xavier returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24 against Marquette. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. from Cintas Center with the game being aired on FS1.
