PERRYSBURG, Ohio – The Xavier Musketeer women's tennis team visited the Bowling Green State Falcons on Sunday, falling in a hard-fought match 4-3.
Head Coach Doug Matthews complimented the opponent: "We have to give a lot of credit to Bowling Green today. They played better than us in the big moments of the doubles and the singles. We need to work on keeping our composure better in those situations."
In singles play, Sophia Abelson (No. 3), Rachael Reichenbach (No. 5) and Lauren Fitz-Randolph (No. 6) each picked up their first wins of the season. Ahmeir Kyle started at No. 1 singles but fell 6-2, 6-0, while Lauren Ghidotti slotted into the No. 2 spot. Ghidotti lost in a tight match 7-6 (8), 6-2.
In doubles play, the duo of Zoe Manion and Ahmeir Kyle at No. 3 doubles picked up their first doubles win of the season 6-4. The No. 1 team of Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson lost in a tough tiebreak 7-5, while the duo of Elizabeth Bagerbaseh and Rachael Reichenbach fell in their match 6-2.
Coach Matthews said this match should help the Musketeers. "A 4-3 match early on in the season on the road is a good experience for us," said Matthews. "Obviously, we wanted a different result but we will use this as motivation moving forward."
The Musketeers next match takes place on Friday Jan. 26 at Eastern Kentucky.
