Musketeers Drop Overtime Thriller Against Creighton, 71-64

Anniina Äijänen led the Musketeers with 14 points
CINCINNATI – Xavier women's basketball dropped a 71-64 overtime thriller against Creighton on Monday afternoon at Cintas Center. Over 2,800 fans were in attendance for the program's annual "Field Trip Day".
The Musketeers moved to 9-11 (2-7 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays improved to 11-8 (5-4 BIG EAST).
• Creighton hit 50 percent (8-for-16) of its shots in the opening quarter to take a 21-8 advantage. The Musketeers outscored Creighton, 14-6, in the second quarter behind a .538 field-goal percentage (7-for-13) to make the score 27-22 at the break. Defensively, Xavier limited the Bluejays to a .214 (3-for-14) field-goal percentage in the second quarter.
• Anniina Äijänen led Xavier with seven points at intermission, while Jada Byrd had six. Creighton held a 21-15 advantage on the glass at the break with Na'Teshia Owens leading Xavier with four.
• Xavier got within one twice in the third quarter before the Bluejays ended the frame on a 13-5 run to take a 45-38 lead into the final quarter.
• Creighton led by as many as 11 in the fourth quarter before the Musketeers battled back to get within one, 59-58, on an Aaliyah Dunham three pointer with 13 seconds left on the clock. The Bluejays hit a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession before Na'Teshia Owens buried a three pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime.
• Creighton outscored Xavier, 10-3, in the extra period to pull away for the win.
• Anniina Äijänen led the Musketeers in scoring for the second time in as many games as the senior forward scored 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
• Jada Byrd added 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting with four assists and two steals. Na'Teshia Owens finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
• Junior Imani Partlow added six points and seven rebounds. Classmate Kindell Fincher matched her career high in rebounding with seven rebounds.
• Creighton won the battle on the glass, 39-32. Xavier held a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint and a 13-6 advantage in points off of turnovers.
• Both teams had 16 assists in the contest. Creighton was 15-for-18 from the free throw line and Xavier was 6-for-11. Xavier matched its season low in turnovers with nine.
• Xavier returns to action on Friday, Jan. 26 against Villanova. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
