Defender played full time in both double overtime matches last week, score first collegiate tally
NEW YORK - After playing 214 minutes and notching her first collegiate goal to help Xavier to an unbeaten record last week, Allison Klimkowski was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week by the conference offices on Monday.
The Centerville, Ohio native played the full 110 minutes of the 0-0 double overtime draw against Butler on Thursday. The result against the Bulldogs was the first by any BIG EAST team this season, and the first time BU had been shutout in conference play. Klimkowski has started every game for a Xavier defense that has forced six shutouts this season.
Klimkowski also played the full time in Xavier's 104-minute double overtime match on Sunday at DePaul, scoring Xavier's first goal shortly after halftime. The goal proved crucial when, after Xavier took a 2-0 lead, DePaul responded to tie the game and force overtime. In the second extra period, Samantha Dewey scored the game-winner on a penalty kick for the Xavier women's soccer's first win over DePaul in program history.
Sunday's win put Xavier in a four-way tie for fourth place with Providence and DePaul, standing at 2-2-1 in conference play. The Musketeers, at 8-6-1 overall, have matched last season's win total with four regular season games remaining, and are looking the secure a second-straight BIG EAST Tournament berth by finishing in the top six in the conference standings.
The weekly award is Klimkowski's first and the third for the Musketeers this season, joining Grace Bahr, who was the Defender of the Week for the week of Sept. 17, and Toni Bizzarro, who was the Goalkeeper of the Week for the week of Sept. 10. Samantha Dewey and Sydney Schembri have also been recognized by the conference, earning BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honors.
Xavier returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 14 when the Musketeers host Marquette at 1:00 p.m.
