The freshman guard scored a season-high 12 points; Four Musketeers score in double figures
CINCINNATI - Freshman Carrie Gross scored a season-high 12 points on Sunday afternoon as Xavier topped Delaware State, 80-59, at Cintas Center. The Musketeers moved to 7-1 on the year, while the Hornets moved to 2-5.
• Xavier hit its first three shots of the game to take an early 9-2 advantage over the Hornets. Delaware State responded by going on an 8-1 run to tie the game for the only time, 10-10, at the 6:12 mark. The Musketeers outscored the Hornets, 13-5, over the final six minutes of action in the quarter to take a 23-15 lead.
• The Musketeers opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run capped by a Tierra Floyd layup, giving Xavier its first double-figure lead, 29-17. The Musketeers led by as many as 15 points, 42-27, at the 1:13 mark before a Delaware State basket in the closing seconds made the score 42-29 heading into the locker room.
• Freshman Carrie Gross had a team-high 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting at intermission as the Musketeers connected on 50 percent of their shot attempts (15-for-30). Sophomore A'riana Gray added nine points and a team-high four rebounds.
• The Musketeers also held a 13-0 advantage in points off of turnovers and a 12-7 advantage in fastbreak points.
• Xavier pushed its lead to 18 points, 51-33, with 5:22 on the clock before the Hornets battled back to get within 12 (63-51) at the end of the third quarter. The Musketeers hit 50 percent (8-for-16) of their shot attempts in the third quarter, paced by Lauren Wasylson who scored nine points (3-for-3 3PT).
• The fourth quarter saw both squads start the period slowly on the offensive side of the floor as the first field goal was made at the 3:46 mark by A'riana Gray. Xavier shook off the cold start by going 5-for-7 from the floor to end the game. The Musketeers outscored the Hornets, 17-8, in the final quarter and led by as many as 23 points, 80-57, down the stretch.
• Lauren Wasylson and Na'Teshia Owens both had nine points in the second half to lead the Musketeers in scoring. A'riana Gray added eight points and nine rebounds.
• Sophomore A'riana Gray posted her third double-double in as many games and her fifth of the season (sixth of her career), scoring a game-high 17 points to go along with 13 rebounds. The forward was 5-for-8 from the floor with two 3-pointers, while going 5-for-8 from the foul line. She added three steals.
• Junior Na'Teshia Owens scored a game-high 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting - her fifth game of the year with 10 or more points - while adding five rebounds. The guard also dished out a career-high eight assists, the first Xavier player with eight assists in a game since Jan. 4, 2017 versus Seton Hall (Marquia Turner had eight assists).
• Freshman Lauren Wasylson scored 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from behind the arc, her fourth game of the year with 10 or more points. She added three rebounds and two assists.
• Freshman Carrie Gross scored a season-high 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting with two 3-pointers. The guard added two assists, two rebounds and one steal in 21 minutes of action off the bench.
• Junior Tierra Floyd added nine points, four rebounds and one block in 15 minutes of action. Sophomore Aaliyah Dunham chipped in a career-high five steals to go along with five assists and two rebounds.
• Xavier scored 19 more points off of turnovers (23-2) than Delaware State and held a 22-9 advantage in bench points. The Musketeers also won the battle on the glass, 37-34.
• Xavier finished with 20 assists, the third time the Musketeers have collected 20 or more assists in a game this year. The Musketeers also had 10 steals, their fifth game of the year with 10 or more steals.
• Xavier returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 16 at Cincinnati in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Fifth Third Arena.
