Cincinnati, OH – The Musketeers found themselves down 1-0 after doubles play, but the team rallied to win five of the six singles matches to give the Musketeers its 5-2 victory over the Hoyas.
Head Coach Doug Matthews thoughts on the match and message to his team after the doubles matches, "We started well in doubles. We were in position to win all three matches and I felt we got tentative and played not to lose at the end. For the singles, we knew we had to go out and win it and not play tight. In all the close sets in singles we played to win and got the job done.
At No. 1 singles, freshman Ahmeir Kyle bounced back from the losses at Princeton and Penn to win in straights sets 7-6 (2), 6-3. Senior Lauren Ghidotti went to a third set, winning in thrilling fashion 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. With the win, Ghidotti moved into 15th on the Xavier all-time wins list with 129. At No. 3 singles, junior Sophia Abelson continued her dominance winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Abelson improved to 7-2 on the season with six of the seven wins coming in straight sets. No. 4 singles, sophomore Rachael Reichenbach went to a third set for the third straight match, but this time she was victorious 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Senior transfer Elizabeth Bagerbaseh won her singles match 7-5, 6-1. Since dropping down to No. 5 singles Bagerbaseh is 5-1 with all five wins coming in straight sets. At No. 6 singles, sophomore Lauren Fitz-Randolph dropped her match 7-6 (6), 6-3. This was only Fitz-Randolph's second loss in the last six matches.
In doubles, the team of Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson won convincingly at No. 1 doubles 6-3. At No. 2 and No. 3 doubles both matches went to a tiebreaker, but Georgetown would win both 7-5. Both of these doubles matches were the first match defeats Xavier had suffered at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club this season.
Overall, February was a strong month for the Musketeers as the team only dropped one match all month, while winning both of its BIG EAST home matches to start 2-0 in conference.
