Xavier Loses Late Lead at No. 13 Louisville in 6-4 Setback

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Xavier returned to the site of its 2017 NCAA Tournament appearance and had another back-and-forth battle with a nationally-ranked Louisville team, falling 6-4 on Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium
The Musketeers (3-5) led as late as the sixth inning before the Cardinals came-from-behind with back-to-back two run innings in the sixth and seventh. XU left the bases loaded in the eighth and was unable to break through in the ninth.

• Xavier continues its road swing, traveling to St. Mary's for a three-game series this weekend in Moraga, Calif. First pitch is set for Friday, March 2 at 5 p.m.

• Xavier collected 10 hits and four runs as three hitters put up multi-hit games.
• Joe Gellenbeck was 1-for-4 with an RBI single and a walk. The lefty is now hitting .452 (14-for-31) through eight games.
• Conor Grammes and Chris Givin both went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Natale Monastra was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
• Junior Matt Warkentin launched his second homer of the season, a solo shot, and finished the day 1-for-3.
• Allbry Major (1-for-5) and Blaine Griffiths (1-for-4, RBI) also collected hits for XU.

• Freshman Henry Miller got the start and threw four innings, allowing two earned runs and six hits while striking out three in a second straight solid outing at a ranked opponent.
• Evan Miller tossed 1.1 innings in relief, allowing two earned runs.
• Trey Schramm followed and lasted 1.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out two.
• Junior righty Matt Kent finished out the game, allowing just one walk and striking out one in a scoreless frame.Â

THIRD INNING: Natale Monastra led off with a single up the middle, moving to second on a single through the middle by Chris Givin. Joe Gellenbeck then singled through the left side, scoring Monastra to get XU on the board.
FOURTH INNING: Matt Warkentin connected for a two out solo homer to left center, making it a 2-2 game.
FIFTH INNING: Chris Givin had a one out single to second base, moving to third on a single through the right side by Conor Grammes. A pitching change followed before Givin came around to score on a wild pitch to give XU the lead. After a one out walk of Joe Gellenbeck, Allbry Major batted next and singled up the middle to trigger another pitching change for Louisville. Blaine Griffiths singled through the left side following the switch to score Grammes and give XU a 4-2 lead.
