Byrd Hits Career Milestone in Loss to Marquette on Friday Night

The senior guard scored a career-high 22 points on 9-for-12 shooting
CINCINNATI – Senior guard Jada Byrd scored a career-high 22 points on Friday night, but it wasn't enough to overcome a first-half deficit as the Musketeers dropped an 80-63 contest to Marquette on Friday night.
The Musketeers moved 9-16 (2-12 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Golden Eagles improved to 16-8 (10-3 BIG EAST).
• Xavier was only outscored in one quarter on Friday night, but it proved costly. After Xavier took a 14-12 lead after one quarter of play, the Golden Eagles outscored the Musketeers, 29-9, in the second frame to take a 41-23 advantage into the locker room. Marquette hit 84.6 percent (11-for-13) of its shot attempts in the second frame.
• Jada Byrd led the Musketeers with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting at the break. Anniina Äijänen paced the Musketeers on the glass with four rebounds as Xavier held a 19-16 advantage on the boards.
• Marquette and Xavier both scored 16 points in the third quarter. The Musketeers hit their first four shots of the final quarter, using an 9-0 run to get within nine (57-48) with 8:19 left in regulation. Xavier hit 75 percent (9-for-12) of its shot attempts in the fourth quarter, outscoring Marquette, 24-23. The Golden Eagles went 9-for-16 in the frame to pull away for the win.

• Anniina Äijänen, Aaliyah Dunham and A'riana Gray all chipped in nine points. Gray scored all of her points in the second half, while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds and dishing out a team-high five assists. Äijänen added seven rebounds and Dunham posted a team-high three steals.
• Marquette won the battled on the glass, 36-34. The Golden Eagles also scored 29 points off of turnovers. Marquette also held a 13-12 advantage in second-chance points.
• Xavier returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 11 against DePaul. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center.
