SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Matt Warkentin homered and Nick Zwack picked up his first career save as Xavier baseball defeated Seton Hall 5-3 in BIG EAST action on Saturday at Owen T. Carroll Field.

Xavier improved to 12-22 (2-3 BIG EAST) overall with the win, snapping a five game losing streak.

The Pirates dropped to 13-13-1 overall (1-1 BIG EAST) with the loss.

• The Musketeers return to action immediately, playing game three against the Pirates at 4:50 p.m.

XU AT THE PLATE

• Allbry Major led XU with a 2-for-5 game at the plate, doubling home a run in the first inning.
• Matt Warkentin moved up to the third spot in the order and went 1-for-5 with a solo homer in the ninth, his team-leading eighth longball of the season.
• Chris Givin (1-for-5, RBI), Ryan Altenberger (1-for-3, R), Conor Grammes (1-fo-4, R) and Nate Soria (1-for-3, R) also contributed hits for XU.
• Givin extended his team-best hitting streak to eight straight games with the hit.
• Major extended his team-best reached base streak to 13 straight games.
• Xavier has now homered in four straight games.

XU ON THE MOUND

• Matt Kent picked up his third win of the season, getting the start and going 5.2 innings. The junior righty allowed three earned runs and struck out five, working around six walks and six hits.
• Freshman Nick Zwack came on in relief and nailed down his first career save with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The lefty struck out four and allowed just three hits and a walk.

HOW XU SCORED

FIRST INNING | Joe Gellenbeck worked a one out walk, moving to second on a ground out by Matt Warkentin and scoring on a double to right by Allbry Major.
FOURTH INNING | Conor Grammes walked with one out before a Nate Soria single to left put two on. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Natale Monastra grounded out to shortstop to score Grammes and make it a 2-2 game.
SIXTH INNING | Ryan Altenberger singled to center field, moving up to second on a walk by Nate Soria. Batting next, Natale Monastra reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Altenberger then came home on a wild pitch to give XU the lead. With two outs, Chris Givin dropped a base hit bunt to score Soria and make it 4-2.
NINTH INNING | With two outs, Matt Warkentin launched a solo homer to center field to give the Musketeers a two-run cushion.
