Musketeers prepare for BIG EAST Championship in Cayce, S.C.
CHICAGO - Xavier women's tennis closed out the regular season on Sunday, falling, 4-1, to conference foe DePaul on Sunday in the final match before the BIG EAST Championship next week in Cayce, S.C. The Musketeers finish the regular season at 12-10 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST play.
Xavier opened the match by taking the doubles point, sweeping the Blue Demons on all three courts. In No. 1 doubles, Sophia Abelson and Lauren Ghidotti took the 6-3 win. On No. 2 doubles, Ahmeir Kyle and Rachael Reichenbach won, 6-4. Elizabeth Bagerbaseh and Zoe Manion took the 6-4 win in No. 3 doubles.
DePaul picked up its first point on No. 3 singles, with DU's Aspasia Avgeri topping Abelson, 6-1, 6-3. The Blue Demons took the 2-1 with a two set win over Kyle in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
A 6-3, 6-3 two set loss for Lauren Ghidotti on No. 2 singles put DU up 3-1 with the other three matches going to a third set.
Bagerbaseh took the first set win 7-5 in No. 5 singles before falling 7-5 in the second set. A 6-3 win for DU's Alina Kuzmenkova secured the win for the Blue Demons.
In No. 4 singles, Reichenbach fell in the first set, 7-6 after six tiebreakers, but came back to win 6-1 in the second set before the match was called during the third set.
In No. 6 singles, Kaitlin Ruether won the first set, 7-5, before falling 7-5 in the second. Ruether was ahead 5-2 in the third when the match was called.
Xavier will now await its seeding for the BIG EAST Championship, being held from April 26-19 in Cayce, S.C.
