Women's Tennis Falls to St. John's in BIG EAST Semifinals

CAYCE, S.C. - Xavier women's tennis' season came to a close on Saturday as the Musketeers fell, 4-0, to St. John's in the Semifinals of the BIG EAST Championships at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C. The Musketeers finish the season at 13-11 overall with a 6-3 record against BIG EAST squads.

On No. 1 doubles, Sophia Abelson and Lauren Ghidotti picked up a 6-1 win while Rachael Reichenbach and Ahmeir Kyle fell, 6-2, on No. 2 doubles. On No. 3 doubles, Elizabeth Bagerbaseh and Zoe Manion fell behind, 5-2, but battled back to make the score 5-4, before falling, 6-4.

St. John's took the 2-0 lead with a win on No. 1 singles, topping Kyle, 6-2, 6-3. The Red Storm pushed the advantage to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bagerbaseh on No. 5 singles.

St. John's picked up the clinching point on No. 2 singles. After falling, 6-2, in the first set and then falling behind 3-1 in the second, Ghidotti battled back to force a tie-break, falling 7-6 (7-1) in the second set to secure the win for the Red Storm.

In No. 3 singles, Sophia Abelson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, winning, 6-3. The second set went to a tie-break, where Abelson fell, 7-6 (7-2), forcing a third set which recorded no score.

In No. 2 singles, Reichenbach jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, but fell 6-4. She jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the second set, but was behind 5-4 when the match was clinched.

In a tightly contested No. 6 match, Kaitlin Ruether went back in forth in the first set, with the match going to a tie-break before Ruether fell 7-6 (7-5). The second set was in a 4-4 tie when the match was called.
