CINCINNATI – Xavier Athletics honored two members of the Xavier family for their integral work to promote and advance the Musketeers' athletic teams on Wednesday at the beginning of the school year staff meeting.
Greg Christopher, Xavier University Vice President for Administration and Director of Athletics, presented the annual Teammate of the Year Award to John Kucia, who retired as Xavier University's Administrative Vice President last June.
"Athletics is a campus-wide effort and no one has been more instrumental in the advancement of our department over the past few decades than John Kucia," said Christopher. "John's fingerprints can be found on everything from our facilities to our place in the BIG EAST. He is the embodiment of the Teamwork Award, which is why, in the future, the award will be named in his honor."
Kucia, a 1969 Xavier graduate, worked at Xavier University for 34 years, serving as the principal assistant to four university presidents. In his role as Vice President, Kucia oversaw Xavier Athletics and played a pivotal role in moving the program from the MCC to the Atlantic 10 to now the BIG EAST Conference. Across 18 sports programs, he has seen Xavier make more than 100 NCAA appearances, including 16 for men's basketball in the past 18 years. Kucia also received the 2018 Paul L. O'Connor, S.J., Leadership Award and is a member of the 2018 Xavier Athletics Hall of Fame.
Kucia is the third recipient of the Teammate of the Year Award, which will be named in his honor moving forward.
Christopher also presented Greg Lautzenheiser, Assistant Director of Xavier's Athletic Communications, with the Greg Park All For One Award, given by the athletics staff to the individual who exceeds expectations throughout the department and works to improve Xavier Athletics as a whole. Greg Park, the award's namesake, was the first-ever athletic business manager at Xavier and spent 25 years in the role before retiring in July 2013.
"Greg's impact on Xavier Athletics is felt far beyond the realm of Athletic Communications," said Christopher. "His willingness to go above and beyond touches every aspect of our program, from student-run events to development and beyond, makes our entire department better and more cohesive."
Lautzenheiser joined Xavier Athletics in August 2014 and works primarily with Xavier's volleyball, women's basketball and men's and women's cross country and track and field programs in addition to being the point person for GoXavier.com. Additionally, Lautzenheiser provides additional support for many other aspects of the department, including Xavier's fundraising arm, the All For One Fund, the department's video and social media efforts, game day staffing and the XSPYs, Xavier's annual student-athlete award show.
