Fluker has worked 15 years in Xavier Athletics
CINCINNATI --- David Fluker, who served as Interim Head Athletic Trainer since Jody Jenike retired in the Spring, is the new Head Athletic Trainer at Xavier University. Fluker has spent 15 years serving Xavier Athletics, including most recently eight years as XU's Associate Head Athletic Trainer.
Fluker is in his second stint with Xavier Athletics, including his ninth straight year. Fluker, who spent seven years (2003-10) working as athletic trainer for the men's basketball program at the University of Cincinnati, served seven years in a similar capacity at Xavier from 1996-2003.
"David knows the department well, so he is uniquely qualified to serve our student-athletes," said Xavier University Vice President and Director of Athletics Greg Christopher. "During the search process, David illustrated a vision on how he would combine his experience with new approaches to lead our Sports Medicine Department in the years ahead."
Fluker will coordinate coverage of medical staffing for all of Xavier's 18 NCAA Division I programs and its 300 student-athletes. Fluker's new role will still include responsibility for the men's basketball trainer duties at Xavier.
"I am excited about the tremendous opportunity to lead our sports medicine efforts," said Fluker. "We have a state-of-the-art training room and wonderful staff. I want to push us to be even better and to be leaders in the sports medicine field, academically and as practitioners."
Fluker came to Xavier the first time in 1996 after three years as the staff athletic trainer for Queen City Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation. Other sports medicine experiences include being staff athletic trainer for Bethesda Montgomery Physical Therapy (1988-91) and graduate assistant athletic trainer at Michigan State University (1986-88). Fluker was selected as a volunteer athletic trainer in 2000 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and as a site athletic trainer at numerous events. He was athletic trainer with USA Judo Team at the 2003 Pan Am Games in the Dominican Republic.
Fluker, who was born in Cincinnati, is a 1986 graduate of Wilmington College with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine-athletic training. He earned his master's in health education-human performance from Michigan State in 1988.
