Swimming Opens Spring Schedule at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – Xavier men's and women's swimming open up the spring portion of the schedule on Saturday, January 12 at Cincinnati. Events with the Bearcats are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Keating Natatorium.

THE OPPONENT - CINCINNATI |
- Cincinnati was last in action in early December, with four men and two women going to the USA Nationals, while the remainder of the team traveled to the Miami Invite.
- On the women's side at USA Nationals, Rocky Laabs (800 free, 1500 free) and Lina Kutsko (100 fly) competed for the Bearcats.
- On the men's side, Tyler Jones (400 free, 800 free, 1500 free), Din Selmanovic (200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 1500 free), Joey Puglessi (100 back, 200 back) and Dominic Polling (100 breast, 200 IM) competed at the USA Winter Nationals.
- The remainder of the team combined for 35 personal best times, ten top-ten UC performances and one school record during the three day meet at Miami.
- UC's women placed second with 1000.5 points behind Miami's 1249.5 points.
- The Bearcat men finished second to Miami, 1271-992.
- Last season, Xavier faced Cincinnati with Virginia Tech at Cincinnati, with the Xavier women falling to Virginia Tech, 201-35, and to Cincinnati, 187-47. Xavier's men fell to Virginia Tech, 198-38, and Cincinnati, 188-49.
- Cincinnati's men won the American Athletic Conference title last season, while the women finished second.

WOMEN'S LAST TIME OUT |
- Xavier was last in action on December 7 at IUPUI. The Musketeer women opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay for Ali Fort, Lydia Schaeffer, Caroline Gaertner and Emily Conners.
- Tilly Baldwin took first in the 1000 free. Emma Kauffled and Katie Kerr also finished in the top four, placing third and fourth respectively.
- Emily Conners won her first event of the day in the 200 free, finishing in 1:54.87.
- Caroline Gaertner took the top spot in the 100 back to lead Xavier. Ali Fort placed third.
- Lydia Schaeffer placed second in the 100 breast, followed in by Becca Titterton in fourth
- Taylor Hogan took first in the 200 fly, and Annie Cummins placed third.
- Emily Conners' took her second win of the day in the 50 free. Tianna Vozar finished third.
- Conners also took a top-two finish in the 100 free, placing second with at time of 52.59.
- Hogan won a second event, the 200 back, with a time of 2:06.23. Ali Fort placed third and Riece Drew finished fourth.
- Kelly Harris led four Musketeers in the top five of the 200 breast, finishing second with her season-best time of 2:24.68. Alison Herman, Lydia Schaeffer and Delaney Sprague followed her in, respectively.
- Tilly Baldwin continued to dominate the distance free, winning the 500 free with a time of 5:09.56.
- Hogan won a third event, the 100 fly, with a time of 57.05. Caroline Gaertner, Lorelei Gaertner and Annie Cummins took third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
- Alison Herman took the top spot in the 200 IM. Delaney Sprague finished third.
- Xavier closed out the meet with a second place finish in the 400 free relay for Emily Saugstad, Caroline Gaertner, Abigail Garner and Tianna Vozar.
- Xavier's women fell narrowly, 152-142.

MEN'S LAST TIME OUT |
- Xavier's men were last in action at IUPUI on December 7. Xavier opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay for Sam Johanns, Matthew Dyer, Brandon Abboud and Alex Sironen.
- Nick Mahoney led the Musketeers in the 1000 free with a time of 9:50.13.
- Ben Quon took third in the 200 free to lead Xavier. Alex Sironen placed third.
- Sam Johanns' second place finish led four Musketeers in the top five. Sironen, Chase Baldwin and Nathan Runyon finished second through fifth, respectively.
- Matthew Dyer took the top spot in the 100 breast. Roark Lundal placed third.
- Brandon Abboud led Xavier in the 200 fly with a time of 1:56.27 in the 200 fly.
- Christian Thomas took the win in the 50 free with a time of 21.36.
- Sam Johanns led Xavier in the 100 free with a time of 47.52 to place third.
- Chase Baldwin took the win in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.34. Ben Quon finished third.
- Matthew Dyer completed the sweep of the breaststroke, taking first in the 200 with a time of 2:08.33.
- Cothalee Watko led the Musketeers in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.91.
- Brandon Abboud tied for the top spot in the 100 fly with a time of 51.59.
- Dyer won a third event, the 200 IM, with a time of 1:56.53. Chase Baldwin finished third.
- Xavier's men fell 180.5-113.4.

- Xavier's women are back in action on Saturday, January 19, at Duquesne at 2:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
- Both squads return to the pool on Sunday, January 27 at the Butler Invite, with events beginning at noon at Fishers High School in Fishers, Ind.
