Women's Basketball Drops BIG EAST Contest at Providence

Xavier hit 10 three pointers on Sunday afternoon, its sixth game of the year with 10 or more three pointers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 71-58 BIG EAST matchup at Providence on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers moved to 10-8 (1-6 BIG EAST), while the Friars improved to 12-8 (4-4 BIG EAST).
• The opening quarter had two ties with the final tie, 11-11, coming at the 5:03 mark. The Friars closed the frame on a 12-3 run to take a 23-14 advantage. Providence hit 69.2 percent (9-for-13) its shot attempts in the first quarter.
• The Friars kept up the hot shooting as they went 8-for-13 from the floor in the second quarter, building a double-figure lead. Providence hit five of its final six shots from the floor to take a 46-31 lead into the locker room.
• A'riana Gray led the Musketeers in scoring with nine points on 3-for-6 shooting, while Princess Stewart added six points. Aaliyah Dunham and Tierra Floyd both chipped in five points.
• Providence held a 19-9 advantage on the glass, while Xavier held an 11-5 advantage in points off of turnovers. A'riana Gray led Xavier on the glass with three rebounds.
• Providence scored seven unanswered points to open the half, building a 22-point lead (53-21). Xavier responded by using a 9-0 run capped by a pair of A'riana Gray free throws to get the Musketeers within 13 (53-40) with 2:40 on the clock. The Friars closed the quarter on a 5-3 run to make the score, 58-43.
• The Musketeers outscored the Friars, 15-13, in the fourth quarter. Xavier knocked down three 3-pointers in the final frame.
• Sophomore forward A'riana Gray posted her BIG EAST leading 10th double-double (13 points, 14 rebounds) of the season. She was 3-for-7 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the foul line. She added three steals and two assists.
• Sophomore Princess Stewart scored nine points, while juniors Na'Teshia Owens and Tierra Floyd both chipped in eight points. Sophomore Aaliyah Dunham and freshman Carrie Gross both finished with seven points.
• Xavier hit 10 three pointers in the game, the team's second straight game with 10 or more three pointers. The Musketeers have made 10 or more three pointers in six games this season.
• Providence won the battle on the glass, 39-28. The Musketeers forced 18 turnovers, converting the miscues into 23 points.
• The Musketeers return to action on Friday, Jan. 25 against Marquette. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
