Xavier stays in BIG EAST Tournament picture after going 1-1 this weekend

OMAHA, Neb. - Xavier fought hard against the No.11 team in the country, but ultimately fell just short on Sunday. The final score against the conference-leading Creighton Bluejays was 17-25, 23-25, 15-25.

Up next, Xavier enters a crucial home stretch as they play Georgetown and Villanova with a spot in the BIG EAST top four on the line. The matches will be played on Friday, October 25, at 7:00 pm ET and Saturday, October 26, at 6:00 pm ET respectively.

Highlights

• Norah Painter had a strong day, recording seven kills at a .286 clip to lead all Xavier attackers. She also chipped in a block as part of her team-high 7.5 point output.

• Freshman Lauren Hanlon had a nice day, recording five kills, three blocks and 6.5 points against a stout team.

• Xavier had one of their best service days of the season, as four Musketeers recorded an ace on the afternoon. Carrigan O'Reilly notched two, while MaryAnn O'Toole, Jayda Carlton and Ailsa Watson all had one.

Summary

• Xavier knew they had a tall task in front of them when they stepped into Creighton's gym, but they certainly didn't show it. The Musketeers controlled things in the early going, but trailing 4-5, Creighton came alive. They would go on consecutive 6-0 runs to go ahead 16-7. However, that would be as large as the deficient would get, as Xavier matched Creighton the rest of the way to finish the set by a final of 25-17.

• Set Two was as competitive as they come, as both teams went on exactly one 3-0 run and nothing longer. Xavier led early and sustained their play longer by going on top 8-7. Creighton would lead by as many as five in thr middle of the set, but Xavier would not go away and fought back to get withing two at 21-23. However, the Bluejays slammed the door and escaped at 25-23.

• After Xavier won the second point in Set Three, it was all Creighton. After a 9-0 run ot break it open, they held Xavier in check. The Musketeers went on a 3-0 run and a 4-0 run, but the Bluejays countered with a 5-0 run to lead 20-11. While it was a valiant effort, Xavier fell in the final set 25-15.
