Vrba Wins Singles Flight in First Team Event at Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Xavier men's tennis returned to action this weekend in the Purdue Invitational Draws. The Musketeers were among 19 total schools competing this weekend in six singles flights and three doubles flights. Jan Vrba won the Flight D Singles bracket following four straight wins over Purdue NW, Army, Niagara and Valparaiso.
Flight A Singles
Srdan Pejic defeated Franz Luna of Purdue 4-6, 2-6(3), 6-3 before losing to Louisville in the second round, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Flight B Singles
Brett Winters defeated Will Harper of Dayton 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 and then defeated Gabriel Carvajal of Valparaiso, 7-6(4), 6-4. Winters then fell in the semi-final of Flight B to Tin Chen of Louisville, 6-1, 6-4. Tin Chen was the eventual champion of Flight B.
Flight C Singles
Aaron Thompson fell in the first round to Matt Demarco of Dayton. He then fell to Satchel Benn of the University of Wisconsin Green Bay in the first consolation matchup. In his second consolation matchup, Thompson defeated Julian Saborio of Purdue, 7-5, 6-1.
Matthew Graft fell in the first round to Tripp Tuff of DePaul. In the first consolation match, Graft fell to Dipin Wadhwa of University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
Flight D Singles
Jan Vrba began with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the first round of play. Vrba then picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nathan Jose of Army in the quarterfinal. In the semi-final, Vrba defeated Darrel Harxhi of Niagara, 7-5, 7-6(1). Vrba moved onto the championship round, where he defeated Phillipp Leithold of Valparaiso, 7-6(2), 1-6, 6-3.
Flight E Singles
Michael Lee fell in the first round (6-3, 6-4) to Marquette. Lee moved onto the consolation bracket, where he won his first matchup, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 over Olivet. He then fell in the final round of his consolation bracket, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Jack Santili.
Shashank Reddy was defeated in the first round to Samuel Eden of Army, 6-1, 7-6(4). Reddy then won his first consolation matchup in a 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-8 victory over Nick Moody of IUPUI. Reddy then fell in the final round of his consolation bracket to Bryce Bonin of Ball State, 6-4, 6-4.
Flight F Singles
Dominic Macaluso fell in the first round to Will Tennison of Marquette, 6-3, 6-4. Macaluso moved onto the consolation matchups, where he grabbed two straight victories to become the champion of his consolation bracket. Macaluso defeated Paul Hawes, 6-1, 6-0 and then defeated Alec Robillard of Ball State, 6-3, 7-5.
Jake Zipoli grabbed his first win in the first round of the flight, defeating Bruno Gonealves of Niagara, 6-2, 6-1. Zipoli then fell in the second round to Alex Verda of Olivet, 6-4, 6-1. Zipoli closed out singles play by defeating Khamasi Muhiga of Ball State, 6-0, 6-1.
Doubles
In doubles, Brett Winters and Srdan Pejic teamed up in Flight A, falling in the first round to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, 7-6(4). They moved onto the consolation bracket, defeating Niagara 6-4 and then Dayton 6-4.
Matthew Graft and Aaron Thompson joined forces in Doubles Flight B, winning in the opening round, 7-6, over Ball State. The duo then fell to Louisville, 6-3. In a consolation matchup, the pair fell, 6-4, to Marquette.
Jan Vrba and Michael Lee competed in Doubles Flight C, falling to Dayton in the opening round, 6-1. They then won their consolation bracket after defeating Ball State and Niagara, 6-4.
Flight A Singles
