CINCINNATI --- Wake Forest University and Xavier University have been competing in the Skip Prosser Classic since the 2009-10 season, a series honoring the late former head coach of both institutions. This season, the Skip Prosser Classic brand will be expanded to include Xavier's Dec. 18th game vs. Western Carolina at Cintas Center. WCU's second-year head coach is Mark Prosser, son of the former Xavier and Wake head coach. XU visits Wake Forest in its next game on Saturday, Dec. 14.
"Skip Prosser's impact on the Xavier basketball program is still felt today," said Xavier head coach Travis Steele. "When I meet the many players that were fortunate to play for Coach Prosser, it's clear that he affected their lives on and off the court. He still stands as a great role model for all of us in the coaching profession. The inclusion of his son Mark and his team in the Skip Prosser Classic tradition is a way to keep his winning legacy front and center where it belongs."
"We are very excited, and honestly appreciative, to be involved in the series that bears my father's name," said Mark Prosser. "My father truly loved his time at both Xavier and Wake Forest, and I know that somewhere, he is enjoying watching the Catamounts also! He, and the entire Prosser family, look forward to watching all of the games to come in this wonderful series! We are humbled to hear that it will continue."
Wake Forest and Xavier adjusted their series and now meet two years in a row followed by a two-year break. That agreement will repeat itself indefinitely in four-year cycles. Xavier, which plays at Wake Forest on Saturday, Dec. 14, will host the Demon Deacons next season.
Xavier leads the all-time series with Wake Forest 5-2, including a 4-2 lead in the six games played so far in the Skip Prosser Classic series. The first Skip Prosser Classic was played during the 2009-10 season at Wake Forest.
Prosser was at Xavier University for 15 years from 1985-2001, including as the Xavier head coach from 1994-2001, and at Wake Forest as head coach from 2001 until his death in 2007. His legacy remains strong at each school.
Prosser posted a 148-65 record in seven seasons as the Xavier head coach and took the Musketeers to four NCAA Tournaments and two NIT appearances. He was 126-68 in six years with the Demon Deacons, taking Wake Forest to four NCAA Tournaments and one NIT.
