Women's Basketball Falls at St. John's on Sunday Afternoon

Freshman Carrie Gross had six points and four rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench
QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 70-41 BIG EAST contest at St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm swept the series against the Musketeers as they improved to 10-12 (3-8 BIG EAST). The Musketeers dropped to 11-11 (2-9 BIG EAST).
• St. John's raced out to an early 17-7 lead at the 3:08 mark. The Red Storm took a 20-12 advantage after one quarter of play behind 9-for-15 shooting. Xavier committed six turnovers in the opening quarter as the Red Storm held a 9-0 advantage in points off of turnovers.
• St. John's outscored Xavier, 9-5, to open the second quarter and take its largest lead of the half, 29-17, and force a Xavier timeout. The Musketeers were held scoreless for the final seven minutes and 29 seconds of the first half as the Red Storm took a 38-17 lead into the locker room.
• A'riana Gray and Na'Teshia Owens paced the Xavier offense in the first half, scoring five points each. Deja Ross added a team-high six rebounds to go along with two points.
• Xavier was limited to a .259 (7-for-27) field-goal percentage, while the Red Storm were 16-for-43 from the floor. St. John's held a 23-17 advantage on the glass and had 10 more points off of turnovers (10-0) than Xavier.
• Xavier outscored St. John's 8-6 to open the second half. The Musketeers outscored the Red Storm, 13-11, in the frame to get within 19 (49-30) at the end of the quarter. The Musketeers were 4-for-10 from the floor in the quarter.
• St. John's hit 60 percent (9-for-15) of its shot attempts in the final quarter, outscoring Xavier ,21-11, to post the 29-point victory.
• Freshmen Carrie Gross and Maddy Johnson combined for 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting with seven rebounds in the second half.
• Three Xavier players scored seven points: Na'Teshia Owens, Aaliyah Dunham and Na'Teshia Owens. Freshman Carrie Gross chipped in six points, while sophomore Deja Ross and freshman Maddy Johnson added five.
• Sophomore Deja Ross led the team on the glass with eight rebounds, while A'riana Gray posted six. Freshman Carrie Gross added four rebounds.
• The 41 points were the Musketeers' second fewest points on the year, while the 16 field goals (16-for-52) matched the team's season low.
• St. John's won the battle on the glass, 39-34, and had 10 more points off of turnovers (12-2).
• The Musketeers end a three-game BIG EAST road swing at Butler on Friday, Feb. 8. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Hinkle Fieldhouse.
