NEW YORK – After finishing a two-match weekend for the Musketeers with a 4-0 record, Matthew Graft earned men's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week. Graft's undefeated weekend extended his singles winning streak to six and his doubles streak to three.
"Matt has worked really hard and improved a lot every year he's been at Xavier," said Xavier head coach Doug Matthews. "He has worked a lot on his attitude and I'm really proud of the player and person he has become."
In the 5-2 loss to Buffalo, Graft played a part in both of Xavier's points. In doubles, partnered with Connor LaFarve, picked up the 7-6 win in the No. 2 spot to help Xavier pick up the doubles point.
In singles, Graft earned the point in the No. 3 spot after leading 6-2, 4-6, 3-1, when the match was retired in the third set.
Against CSU, Graft helped the Musketeers pick up the doubles point, partnering with LaFavre in the No. 2 spot for a 6-1 win. Xavier also took No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Graft came from behind to win the No. 3 spot 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to pull Xavier into a 3-3 draw after trailing. Xavier eventually clinched the win in the No. 2 singles spot.
Graft is the second Musketeer to earn the honor on the men's side after Michael Lee was named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week last week. Kaitlin Ruether was named the women's Athlete of the Week in the Musketeers sweep of the weekly honors.
Xavier's men return to action this weekend, hosting DePaul on Friday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club, then traveling to Dayton on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match.
