CAYCE, S.C. - Xavier women's tennis collected another win on Saturday morning in the second round of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships after defeating No. 8 Georgetown, 4-1, at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center. The Musketeers are now 21-2 overall and will move on to the semi finals to be played Sunday, April 21.

"Today was a great day for the Musketeers," said freshman Emily Thomas. "We were able to over come the adversity of a rain delay yesterday to secure a win and a spot in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championships. It was a team effort and everyone fought hard against a good Georgetown team. We have to stay focused for tomorrow's match, and we are ready to take on whoever our opponent is."

THE MATCH

Xavier claimed the first point in doubles play after Ahmeir Kyle and Emily Thomas defeated the Hoyas in the No. 1 spot, while teammates Hunter Roper and Rachael Reichenbach grabbed a 6-4 win in the No. 3 spot. Sophia Abelson and Kaitlin Ruether trailed, 3-5, in the No. 2 spot when the doubles point was decided.

Xavier began singles competition with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 spot from the efforts of Hunter Roper. After Xavier jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Rachael Reichenbach fell in the No. 4 spot, 3-6, 0-6, giving Georgetown their only point of the match.

Emily Thomas responded for the Musketeers with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the No. 3 spot, giving Xavier a 3-1 edge over the Hoyas. Ahmeir Kyle then grabbed a 6-3, 7-5 win for the Musketeers in the No. 1 spot, giving Xavier a 4-1 victory.

Sophia Abelson led in the No. 2 singles spot, 3-6, 6-3, 2-1, when the final point was decided. Kaitlin Ruether also had a 6-2, 5-4 lead in the No. 6 spot when Xavier claimed their final point.
