Musketeers honor seniors Zoe Manion and Sophia Abelson in final home match

CINCINNATI - Xavier women's tennis sent seniors Zoe Manion and Sophia Abelson out in style in the final home match of their careers, topping Cincinnati, 4-3, to set a new school record with 17-straight wins on Sunday at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. Xavier is now 19-2 on the season, and 7-0 in BIG EAST play, with one regular season match remaining

The new school record for consecutive wins tops the previous school record of 16 from the 1995 season.

THE MATCH

Xavier claimed the first set in doubles, with Sophia Abelson and Kaitlin Ruther taking a 2-3 win in the No. 2 spot. Cincinnati came back to claim the No. 3 spot, 6-3, over Rachael Reichenbach and Hunter Roper.

Emily Thomas and Ahmeir Kyle, in the No. 1 doubles spot, secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win.

In singles play, Cincinnati came back to tie the match, 1-1, with a 6-2, 6-3 win the No. 5 spot over Hunter Roper.

Ahmeir Kyle put the Musketeers back ahead, winning 7-6 (2), 6-1 in the No. 1 spot to put Xavier up 2-1.

Xavier extended its lead to two with a win for Emily Thomas in the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-2.

Cincinnati claimed two straight wins, in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-3 over Rachael Reichenbach, and in the No. 2 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, over Sophia Abelson.

With the match tied 3-3, the final point to be decided was the No. 6 spot. After taking the first set on a tiebreaker, and falling in the second set, Kaitlin Ruether took the third set to win the points, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4 and secure the win for Xavier.
