Hayley Jakovich Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
09.16.19 | Women's Soccer
NEW YORK - Following a fourth-straight shutout, Xavier women's soccer picked up a second-straight BIG EAST Defender of the Week honor, with Hayley Jakovich earning the nod from the conference offices on Monday.
Jakovich helped extend the Musketeers' shutout streak to 380 minutes with two more clean sheets this week. Xavier blanked Northern Kentucky, 4-0, and Cincinnati, 0-0, last week, outshooting the two squads by a combined 33-10 margin.
The sophomore played a team-high 84 minutes for a Xavier defense which didn't allow a single shot on net on Thursday against NKU, then played the full 110 minutes on Sunday, helping hold the Bearcats to just four shots on goal.
Xavier's 0.79 goals against average ranks second in the BIG EAST this season while its five shutouts are two more than the next closest team.
This is Jakovich's first weekly award of the season, and second of her career, as the BIG EAST All-Freshman team selection from 2018 earned Freshman of the Week honors last season.
It's the Musketeers' third weekly honor, with Grace Bahr earning Defender of the Week last week, and Jackie Richards earning Freshman of the Week in the opening week of the season.
Samantha Dewey picked up a third nod to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after leading the Musketeers in points over the weekend. The BIG EAST points-leader notched her second multi-goal game of the season with two scores, including the game winner, against Northern Kentucky on Thursday. She added two shots in the Musketeers' scoreless draw at Cincinnati on Sunday. Dewey was also named to the Weekly Honor Roll in the first week of the season and last week.
