Gray Posts 20th Career Double-Double in Road Loss at Villanova

The junior forward scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Junior A'riana Gray posted her 20th career double-double on Sunday afternoon, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Musketeers dropped a 66-54 game at Villanova. The Musketeers moved to 2-14 (1-4 BIG EAST), while Villanova improved to 9-7 (4-2 BIG EAST).
• Xavier hit its opening basket of the game on a Sarah Leyendecker layup before the Wildcats scored 16 unanswered points on 6-for-8 shooting, forcing a Xavier timeout. The Musketeers were limited to 2-for-16 shooting in the opening frame as the Wildcats held a 21-6 advantage after one quarter.
• Xavier went 4-for-9 from the floor to open the second quarter - outscoring Villanova, 9-8 - to make the score, 29-15, at the 3:09 mark (media timeout - 3:59). Villanova closed the half on a 5-2 run to take a 34-17 advantage.
• The Musketeers were limited to a .250 field-goal percentage (7-for-28) in the first half, while Villanova knocked down 50 percent (13-for-26) of its shot attempts.
• A'riana Gray led Xavier with six points, while Carrie Gross added four. Gross also added five rebounds and two steals.
• Xavier's offense came to life in the third quarter as the Musketeers hit 53.3 percent (8-for-15) of its shot attempts. Xavier outscored Villanova, 21-16, in the frame to trail by 12 points (50-38) heading into the fourth quarter.
• The Musketeers closed within nine points three times in the final quarter, and as late as the 2:56 mark on an Aaliyah Dunham three pointer. Both teams scored 16 points in the final quarter as the Wildcats pulled away for the 66-54 win.
• A'riana Gray had 14 points and six rebounds in the second half, while Carrie Gross added six points on 3-for-4 shooting.

• Villanova won the battle on the glass, 38-29, and had six more second-chance points (12-6). Xavier forced 19 turnovers, turning the miscues into 21 points.
• Xavier returns to action on Friday, Jan. 17 vs DePaul. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
