Tyrique Jones hits the 1,000 point mark for his Xavier career

MILWAUKEE, WI. – Xavier men's basketball fell on the road, 85-65 to the Marquette Golden Eagles on Wednesday evening. Tyrique Jones earned his 1,000 career point in the first half and finished the game with a team-high 16 points. Three other Musketeers scored in double figures as Xavier fell for a third-straight game. The Musketeers fall to 12-6 overall and 1-4 in BIG EAST play.

FIRST HALF

After Xavier won the tip, Marquette jumped to an early lead, securing the first bucket of the game. Jason Carter equalized the score with an offensive board and put back, 2-2 18:51.
Marquette jumped to an early 17-8 before a quick bucket from Naji Marshall and a deep three pointer from Zach Freemantle cut the Musketeers deficit to six, 19-13 at 14:10.
Quentin Goodin found Tyrique Jones under the basket after a Golden Eagle turnover at 12:44 to keep the deficit at six, 21-15.
Naji Marshall connected for a deep three-pointer going into the second media of the half, 23-18 Marquette.
Xavier held Marquette scoreless for three minutes, before Markus Howard connected on a fadeaway to end the drought, 25-18 at 9:31.
Bryce Moore blocked a Golden Eagle floater, before finding Tyrique Jones for the dunking finish. On the next possession, Naji Marshall made a driving layup to bring the Musketeers within three, 25-22 at the 7:49 mark.
After Xavier went without a field goal for four minutes when Jason Carter found Tyrique Jones for his 1,000-career point, with a layup under the basket, 35-27 with 4:35 remaining in the first.
After a flagrant foul on Marquette's Theo John, Tyrique Jones connected on one free throw and Naji Marshall earned a layup out the out-of-bounds play to bring Xavier within five, 30-35.
After a quick 5-0 run, Marquette extended its lead 40-30 forcing a Xavier timeout with 2:15 remaining.
Marquette held Xavier scoreless for the final 3:48 minutes of the half, entering the locker room 44-32 at the break.
Naji Marshall lead the Musketeers at the break with 13 points and five boards. Tyrique Jones added nine points in the half.

SECOND HALF

After back and forth possession to open the half, Paul Scruggs connected for a fancy jumper to give the first bucket of the half. Jason Carter stole the possession of an inbounds and connected for an under-the-basket layup, 44-36 Marquette.
Markus Howard responded with a quick eight points to extend the Golden Eagle lead, 54-39 at 16:04.
Marquette continued on a 15-0 run, forcing a Xavier timeout, 61-39 with 12:58 left.
Tyrique Jones drew a foul under the basket, ending a five-minute scoring drought connecting on two free throws.
Paul Scruggs ended a field-goal scoring drought, grabbing the offensive board for the put-back to make it 63-43 Marquette with 10:55.
On the next possession, Paul Scruggs found Dontarius James for a corner three, cutting the lead back to 20, 66-46.
After a missed basket on the Marquette end, Tyrique Jones muscled into the paint for a bucket, 71-51 with 8:08 remaining.
Paul Scruggs added six points over a three minute span for the Musketeers, to make it 80-57 going in to the final three minutes.
Three pointers from Zach Freemantle and KyKy Tandy closed out scoring for the Musketeers, setting the final score at 85-65.
Paul Scruggs led the Musketeers with 11 points in the second half.

NOTABLE

Tyrique Jones posted his 1,000th career point in the first half. The senior finishing the night with a team-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Naji Marshall added 15 for the Musketeers, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Paul Scruggs finished with 11 points, all scored in the second half.
Zach Freemantle finished with 10 points, going 3-of-4 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from outside.
