Tyrique Jones records 12th double-double in 84-82 loss
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's basketball fell short to Marquette in a double-overtime thriller, 84-82, on Wednesday night at Cintas Center. Five Musketeers scored in double figures, led by senior Quentin Goodin with 19 points. Tyrique Jones recorded his 12th double-double of the season as Xavier falls to 2-6 in BIG EAST Conference play.

FIRST HALF |
- Xavier opened the game with a made hook shot from Tyrique Jones from the left block. On the following possession, the Musketeers took a 5-3 lead after Jason Carter connected on a three-pointer with 18:50 left in the half.
- With 15:00, Paul Scruggs connected on a back-cutting layup off an assist from Zach Freemantle to tie the game at 9-9. Quentin Goodin drained three-pointer two possessions later, giving the Musketeers a 12-11 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Xavier took a 16-13 lead with 12:05 left to play after Bryce Moore knocked down a transition three-pointer off an assist from Goodin. Goodin then connected on a three-pointer following a media timeout, giving Xavier a 19-15 lead.
- With 8:00 left to play, Jones scored a tip-n a layup off a missed shot, making the score 22-17 in favor of the Musketeers.
- Marquette continued on an 8-0 run, which was snapped when Scruggs connected on a reverse layup under the basket, making the score 25-24 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
- With 0:43 left, Jones cut Marquette's lead to 36-31 after connecting on another put-back layup. Marquette knocked down a three pointer with 0:13 left, and Scruggs answered on the other end for the Musketeers with a driving layup, making the score 39-33 in favor of Marquette at halftime.
- Jones led the way in scoring for the Musketeers with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. Jones also grabbed six rebounds and had an assist in the half.
- Goodin added seven points for Xavier, shooting 2-of-5 from the floor with one assist and one steal.
- The Musketeers shot 13-of-30, 43 percent, from the field in the half and connected on four three pointers. Xavier's bench scored 10 points in the half, and 18 of their 33 points came from in the paint.

SECOND HALF |
- The Musketeers opened the half with a made three-pointer courtesy of Zach Freemantle, making the score 39-36 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Two possessions later, Naji Marshall drained a jumper from just above the free-throw line, cutting Marquette's lead to 1 with 17:00 remaining.
- Xavier regained the lead after Tyrique Jones grabbed an offensive rebound off his own missed shot and connected on a floater down low. This forced a Marquette timeout and gave Xavier a 40-39 lead with 16:25 left to play.
- Consecutive made jumpers from Freemantle and Marshall gave Xavier a 44-41 lead with 15:10 left to play. Marshall then connected on a second-chance layup, extending Xavier's lead to 46-41.
- KyKy Tandy gave the Musketeers a 49-43 lead after he knocked down Xavier's sixth three-pointer of the night with 12:05 remaining in the second half. Three minutes later, Goodin knocked down another three-pointer, giving the Musketeers a 53-45 lead.
- Marquette went on a 6-0 run, cutting Xavier's lead to two points with 5:30 remaining. Xavier had zero field goals for the next six minutes following Goodin's three-pointer but drained three free-throws, giving them a 56-53 lead with 3:20 left to play.
- With 1:40 left to play, Scruggs made a turn-around jumper from the left block, giving Xavier a 58-53 lead and forcing a Marquette timeout. The Golden Eagles then scored five-straight points to tie the game at 58.
- With 0:09 left to play, Marquette's Koby McEwen was fouled on a three-point attempt and connected on three-free throws, making the score 61-58. Naji Marshall sent the game into overtime after draining a transition three-pointer from straight away as time expired, tying the game at 61-61.

OVERTIME |
- Marshall opened the overtime period with a pull-up jumper from the left side, giving the Musketeers a 63-61 lead early. Marquette regained the lead after a three-point play on the following possession.
- With 3:00 left to go, Marshall scored on a floater down low, making the score 67-66 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Marquette knocked down a free-throw on the other end, making the score 68-66 with 2:20 left to play.
- Marshall was fouled with 1:25 remaining and drained both of his free-throws, making the score 68-68. Xavier and Marquette both went scoreless for the next 1:25, forcing a second overtime.

SECOND OVERTIME |
- Marquette opened the second overtime with two made three-throws, making the score 70-68. The Musketeers responded on the next offensive possession when Goodin knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to give Xavier a 71-70 lead with 4:08 remaining.
- The Golden Eagles responded with a three-pointer of their own on the next possession and took a 73-71 lead. Then, on Xavier's next possession, Goodin drained a three-pointer as the shot clock expired, giving the Musketeers a 74-73 lead.
- Scruggs hit another turn-around jumper with 1:46 remaining to give Xavier a 76-74 lead. Marquette then tied the game with a made layup on the other end.
- Marquette connected on a three-pointer following a timeout, giving them a 79-76 lead with 0:34 remaining. Jones made one free-throw on the other end, cutting Marquette's lead to 79-77.
- With 0:10 left, Scruggs made a driving layup, making the score 82-79 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Marquette made on free-throw on the other end, and Zach Freemantle connected on a three-pointer on the ensuing offensive possession.
- Holding an 83-82 lead, Marquette made one free-throw with 2.3 seconds to go. The Musketeers failed to get a last-second shot off in time, resulting in an 84-82 final score.

- Five Musketeers scored in double figures, led by Quentin Goodin with 19 points. He did so on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and connected on five three-pointers in the contest, a career-best mark for made three pointers
- Marshall finished with 16 points after going scoreless in the first half. Marshall added seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in the game.
- Tyrique Jones recorded his 12th double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in the game. Jones now has 23 career double-doubles.
- Goodin finished with a season-high five made three-pointers.
- Xavier made a season-high 11 three-pointers and shot 48 percent from beyond the arc in the contest.
