Musketeers Fall to Seton Hall on Wednesday Night

Zach Freemantle posted a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's basketball dropped an 85-68 contest with Seton Hall on Wednesday night at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers moved to 8-2 (1-2 BIG EAST), while the Pirates improved to 7-4 (4-1 BIG EAST).
• Xavier hit its first five shots of the game, taking an 11-8 lead on a Jason Carter three pointer at the 17:00 mark. The Musketeers extended their lead to five points (13-8) on another Jason Carter three pointer at the under 16-minute media timeout (15:55). Xavier started the game 6-for-7 from the floor with Jason Carter scoring nine points on 4-for-4 shooting.
• The Musketeers led by as many as six points (20-14) with 12:33 on the clock before the Pirates scored six unanswered points to tie the game. The two teams exchanged baskets over the next four minutes until the Pirates took their first lead since the opening minute of the game, 27-24, with 5:37 left in the half.
• Seton Hall ended the frame on a 17-4 run on 8-for-12 shooting, taking a 44-28 advantage into the locker room. The Pirates scored 15 unanswered points to end the half.
• Jason Carter led the Musketeers with 10 points, while Zach Freemantle and Ben Stanley both added six. Carter also led the team on the glass with six rebounds. The Pirates held a 24-16 advantage on the glass and scored 11 more second-chance points (13-2).
• Xavier opened the second with a dunk by Paul Scruggs and a three pointer by Zach Freemantle to make the score 47-33 at the 18:43 mark. The Musketeers scored 12 more points in the second half than they did in the first half, but couldn't put together enough defensive stops as Seton Hall outscored Xavier, 41-40, in the stanza.
• Xavier closed the game on a 12-2 run capped by a C.J. Wilcher three pointer. Zach Freemantle scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half.
• Seton Hall held an 18-12 advantage on the glass in the second half and posted a .577 field-goal percentage (15-for-26). The Musketeers hit 46.9 percent (15-for-32) of their shot attempts in the frame.
• Zach Freemantle scored a game-high 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting, his fourth 20-point performance of the season. The sophomore forward also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
• Ben Stanley and Jason Carter both finished with 12 points as they combined to go 10-for-16 from the floor. Carter added seven rebounds.
• Paul Scruggs chipped in six points and a game-high eight assists.
• Seton Hall won the battle on the glass, 42-28, and scored three more points off of turnovers (13-10). The Pirates also held a 15-11 advantage in second-chance points.
• Xavier continues its homestand on Wednesday, Jan. 6 vs St. John's. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. with the game being aired on the CBS Sports Network.
