Musketeers Drop Regular-Season Finale at St. John's

Redshirt-sophomore Sarah Leyendecker led Xavier with eight points and three blocks
QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier women's basketball ended regular-season action with a 74-37 loss at St. John's on Sunday afternoon. Xavier dropped to 3-26 (2-16 BIG EAST), while the Red Storm improved to 18-11 (11-7 BIG EAST).
• St. John's opened the game on a 10-2 run on 3-for-4 shooting, forcing a Xavier timeout. The Red Storm led by as many as 14 points twice in the opening frame before taking a 24-12 advantage into the second quarter. St. John's was 7-for-13 from the floor in the opening quarter with five 3-pointers.
• St. John's and Xavier combined to go 6-for-32 in the second quarter as neither squad could get their offense going. The Red Storm outscored Xavier, 10-9, in the frame to take a 34-21 advantage into the locker room.
• Sarah Leyendecker paced the Musketeers with six points at the break, while Carrie Gross added four points.
• St. John's held a 23-18 advantage on the glass and scored seven more points off of turnovers (11-4). Deja Ross led Xavier with six rebounds.
• Xavier missed its first seven shots of the second half as St. John's pulled ahead for a 43-21 lead at the media timeout (5:52). St. John's outscored Xavier, 23-6, in the third quarter to take a 57-27 lead after three quarters.
The Musketeers' cold shooting continued as they went 7-for-34 in the second half as the Red Storm pulled away for the 74-37 win.

• Xavier won the battle on the glass, 46-40. Ayanna Townsend paced the team with a game-high 10 rebounds, her second career game with 10 or more rebounds.
• Turnovers proved costly as St. John's turned 22 Xavier miscues into 24 points. The Red Storm also scored nine more fastbreak points (11-2).
• Xavier travels to the BIG EAST Tournament on March 6-9 in Chicago, Ill. The tournament is being held at Wintrust Arena.
• The tournament bracket will be finalized on Monday, March 2.
