Baseball Adds Three Transfers to Roster

Jared Cushing, Alex Helmin and Jeffrey Holtz join the Musketeers for 2021 season
CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball head coach Billy O'Conner announced the addition of three transfers for 2020-21. Jared Cushing (Texas Tech), Alex Helmin (Arizona State), and Jeffrey Holtz (Madison College/Indiana) will join the Musketeers for the 2021 season.

Cushing will have four years of eligibility after appearing in five games in 2020 before the season was cut short. In those five appearances, Cushing went 1-4 at the plate with a walk, scoring a run. On defense, Cushing appeared at second base in four games and shortstop in one.
Cushing is originally from Naperville, Ill., where he lettered four years at Joliet Catholic Academy. During his high school career, he was a part of three East Suburban Catholic Conference Championships and two regional championships, with 102 career wins, earning ESCC All-Conference three times. As a senior, he hit .409 in ESCC play, with 34 RBI, 35 runs scored and 31 stolen bases, and earned ESCC Defensive Player of the Year after posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in conference play.

Cushing plans to major in Sports Management at Xavier. He is the son of David Cushing and Renee Cushing. He has two siblings, a brother, Marcus, and sister, Alex.

Alex Helmin is an outfielder transferring from Arizona State University where he spent the 2020 season.

Helmin will have four years of eligibility after appearing in five games for the Sun Devils before the season was cut short. In those five appearances, Helmin went 1-3 at the plate with an RBI. Helmin played in right field in each appearance in which he played on defense.

Helmin is from Frankfort, Ill., where he spent four years as a member of the varsity team at Providence Catholic High School. Helmin was a member of the state-championship squad during his freshman season, and led the team at the plate as a sophomore as the team went the 4A Andrew Regional Championship in 2017. He was selected to the 2018 Baseball Blue Division All-Catholic Team after an impact junior season, where the team played in the Class 4A Providence Regional Championship. Helmin capped off his career with a spot on the Herald-News All-Area First Team after batting .354 with 12 extra-base hits and 28 RBI.

Helmin is the son of Chris and Dan Helmin. He has an older brother, Andrew, who ran track at Notre Dame.

Jeffrey Holtz is an outfielder and first baseman transferring from Madison College in Wisconsin, where he transferred for the 2020 season after spending a season at Indiana.

Holtz will come in with four seasons of eligibility after redshirting the 2019 season at IU and having the 2020 season cut short after making four appearances for Madison College. In those four appearances, Holtz went 4-16 at the plate, including a home run, collecting three RBI and scoring three runs. In those four games, Holtz played at first twice, in the outfield and appeared as the DH.

Originally from Hartland, Wis., Holtz played at Arrowhead High School where he was a four-year letterwinner for a program that was a two-time state runner-up, and a four-time conference champion during his time there. During his career at Arrowhead, Holtz was a three-time All-State honoree, including earning a spot on the First Team during his senior season, when he was named the Wisconsin Player of the Year, Milwaukee Co-Player of the Year, Perfect Game Player of the Year, and Conference Player of the Year, after hitting .481 with 10 home runs. Holtz was also was a three-year letterwinner in football.

Holtz plans to major in Finance at Xavier. He is the son of Karen and Kent Holtz. He has two siblings, a twin brother, Lance, and a sister, Stephanie.
