Brett Winters Finishes Runner-Up in the Singles A-Flight in Cleveland ITA Summer Circuit Event

CLEVELAND – Xavier men's tennis' rising senior Brett Winters advanced to the finals of the singles A-Flight at the 2020 Oracle ITA Summer Circuit event held at the Cleveland Racquet Club, finishing runner-up
Winters opened play against Chukwudumebi Smarty, winning in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Winters faced off with Michigan State's Nicholas Williams, coming back from a first set setback to win in three, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 to advance to the semifinals.
In the semis, Winters faced James Hopper from Case Western Reserve, winning 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the final match.
In the finals, facing Alex Bancila of the University of Illinois, Winters fell in the first set, 4-6, before taking the second set, 6-4, to force a third. Bancila took the final set to win the flight.
Before the 2020 dual season was cut short, Winters, originally from River Vale, N.J., was in the midst of a strong season, playing in the No. 1 spot in singles and doubles for the Musketeers. His six singles wins in the shortened season, all in the No. 1 spot, were a team-high. Winters also added five wins in doubles play during dual matches, all in the No. 1 spot.
