Dwon Odom Earns BIG EAST Conference Player Of The Week
12.20.21 | Men's Basketball
XU has had a player honored six weeks in a row.
CINCINNATI --- Xavier University sophomore Dwon Odom has been named BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week after contributing 12.5 points, 3.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 2.5 steals per game in wins over Morehead State and Marquette this past week, while shooting 83.3 percent (10-12) from the field. Odom is the second straight Musketeer to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week honors as junior Jack Nunge won the award on Dec. 13.
Â
Odom scored a career-high 19 points in the win over Marquette on Saturday, while hitting 8-9 from the field, to go with three steals. He tied his career high with six assists in the Morehead State win.
Â
Xavier has now had a player honored in each of the six weeks of the league awards this season. The first four weeks Xavier captured spots on the BIG EAST Honor Roll, including senior Nate Johnson twice (Nov. 29 and Dec. 6) and once each for seniors Paul Scruggs (Nov. 15) and Adam Kunkel (Nov. 22).
Â
The awards are just one indication of the balance on this year's team, which has four players averaging in double figures in scoring and two others over 8.0 ppg. Odom became the seventh different player to lead Xavier in scoring this season in the first 12 games when he scored a career-high 19 points vs. Marquette. In fact, Xavier has a streak of six different scoring leaders for the last six games: Johnson vs. Central Michigan on Dec. 1, Scruggs at Oklahoma State on Dec. 5, junior Zach Freemantle vs. Ball State on Dec. 8, Nunge vs. Cincinnati on Dec. 11, junior Jerome Hunter vs. Morehead State on Dec. 15 and Odom vs. Marquette on Dec. 18. Kunkel led XU in scoring earlier in the season vs. Norfolk State on Nov. 21.
Â
Xavier, 11-1 and 1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference, takes a seven-game winning streak to Villanova for a Tuesday night matchup.
