Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match vs Thundering Herd

Freshman Delaney Hogan posted a season-high 17 kills on Sunday afternoon
CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball dropped a five-set match (19-25, 25-14, 30-28, 14-25, 10-15) at Marshall on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers move to 2-3 on the year, while the Thundering Herd improve to 2-2.
Xavier moved to 10-7 in the all-time series with Marshall. The Thundering Herd won both matches between the two schools this year in five sets.

SET ONE
The opening set had seven ties and two lead changes. Xavier led by two points (8-6) before the Thundering Herd scored six unanswered points, taking 12-8 lead they would never relinquish. Marshall led by as many as eight points in the set and pulled away for a 25-19 win.
SET TWO
Xavier never trailed in the second set and posted a .469 hitting percentage, recording a 25-14 victory. Delaney Hogan and MaryAnn O'Toole combined for eight kills in the set with no attacking errors.
SET THREE
The third set featured 19 ties and seven lead changes with neither team leading by more than three points. Tied at 28, the Musketeers got back-to-back kills from Moriah Hopkins and Norah Painter - winning the set, 30-28.
SET FOUR
The fourth set had five ties and two lead changes. Xavier trailed by one point (13-12) midway through the set before the Thundering Herd used a 9-0 run to take a 22-12 advantage. Marshall outscored Xavier, 3-2, down the stretch to seal the 25-14 win and force a fifth set.
SET FIVE
The final set had six ties and three lead changes. Xavier led by one point (6-5) before Marshall scored five unanswered points to take a 10-6 advantage. The Musketeers responded with a 4-2 run to close within two points (12-10), but the Thundering Herd scored the final three points of the set to win the match.

• Freshman Delaney Hogan posted a team and season-high 17 kills. The middle blocker added a .438 hitting percentage and two blocks.
• Kelly Franxman added a season-high 14 kills to go along with a career-high 21 digs, the first double-double of her career.
• MaryAnn O'Toole added 14 kills and 12 digs for her sixth career double-double and fourth of the season. Norah Painter chipped in nine kills and a season-best .412 hitting percentage.
• Carrigan O'Reilly posted 55 assists and 18 digs. She now has two double-doubles this season and seven in her career.Â
• Alyssa Overbeck recorded a team-high 23 digs, while Stevie Wolf added 16.
• Marshall held an 8-4 advantage in total team blocks and had two more aces (6-4). The Thundering Herd posted a .251 hitting percentage, while the Musketeers hit .197.

• Xavier returns to action on Feb. 19-20 in a two-match series at DePaul. The series is the BIG EAST opening weekend for both programs.
