Women's Soccer Opens Home Schedule on Sunday with Northwestern

Musketeers start season at 1-0 with road win at SLU
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer (1-0) opens up the home portion of the schedule on Sunday, August 22, hosting Northwestern at 1:00 p.m. at Corcoran Field. The game will be available for live stream through the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The game opens a three-game home-stand, continuing with Cincinnati on Thursday, August 26 and Murray State on Sunday, August 29, part of a doubleheader with Xavier's men.

- Sunday's game will be the season opener for the Wildcats, who finished last season at 6-6-1, going 5-6 in an All-Big Ten regular season. NU topped Purdue 1-0 in post-season play before the season came to a close against Wisconsin, falling 4-2 on PKs after playing to a 1-1 draw through double overtime.
- Senior Regan Steigleder led Northwestern with nine points on a team-high four goals and an assists.
- Junior Olivia Stone and sophomore Aurea Martin each tallied three times last season.
- Junior Mackenzie Wood played nearly 1200 minutes in frame, staring all 13 matches. She finished with a 6-6-1 record, and a GAA of 0.91.
- This is the first match-up with the Wildcats in program history.

- Xavier women's soccer opened up the season with a top-25 win, topping No. 21 Saint Louis, 1-0, after Sonia Vargas scored from Emma Marcus in the closing minutes at Hermann Stadium on Thursday evening.
- Vargas scored after Dana Dahm used a header to clear a Saint Louis corner kick out of the penalty box and Emma Marcus drove the ball into the attacking third, finding Vargas who shot from 18 yards out to put the Musketeers ahead, 1-0, in the 85th minute.
- Vargas' tally marked her first goal, and first game-winner, as a Musketeer.
- Emma Marcus picked up the assist on Vargas' game-winner, her first assist and point as a Musketeer. She finished with a team-high four shots, with three on-frame.
- The Musketeers held a 18-6 advantage on shots, including a 10-2 advantage in the second half. Eight of Xavier's looks were on frame compared to a pair for the Billikens.
- Chloe Netzel made the start in her collegiate debut, leading Xavier with two shots on-goal in the first half.
- Ella Rogers also started in her first game as a Musketeer, also recording a pair of shots in the first half.
- Mathilde Rasmussen and Molly McLaughlin each had a pair of shots as well.
- Olivia Jenkins played the full time in-goal, collecting a pair of saves for her ninth shut-out as a Musketeer.
- Hayley Jakovich and Grace Brauer played the full 90 minutes on the Xavier backline to help preserve the clean sheet. Molly McLaughlin also played 90 minutes, in the midfield.

SPRING 2021 SEASON |
- Xavier finished spring 2021 at 3-6 overall and 2-4 in BIG EAST play, picking up wins over Bellarmine in the non-conference portion of the schedule, and BIG EAST wins over Creighton and DePaul, all three coming on the road.
- Following the spring season, two Musketeers earned all conference honors, All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree, senior midfielder Molly McLaughlin, and All-Freshman Team member, forward Sonia Vargas.
- McLaughlin led the Musketeers with four points on two goals, while sophomore Grace Blumfeldt finished her rookie season with three point on a goal and an assist.
- After finishing fourth in the Midwest Division, the Musketeers missed the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time in Nate Lie's tenure as head coach.

THE MUSKETEERS |
- The Musketeers return 26 letter-winners from the spring, including All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree, senior midfielder Molly McLaughlin, and All-Freshman Team member, forward Sonia Vargas.
- Xavier's returners account for over 70 percent of the goals scored last season, led by McLaughlin's pair of tallies.
- The Musketeers added and 11-person freshman class for the fall after losing 11 letterwinners from spring 2021.
- Xavier was picked seventh in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, collecting 45 points. Georgetown was picked to win the conference.
- Ahead of the start of the 2021 season, head coach Nate Lie announced additions to his staff. Katy Etelman joins Xavier as an assistant coach, while Tyler Smaha, who served as Xavier's Director of Player Development last season, also moves into the role of assistant coach. Jacob Morrison joins Xavier as the Director of Goalkeeping and Kaitlyn Jones joins Lie's staff as Director of Player Analysis/Operations.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE |
- Xavier hosts Cincinnati for game two of a three-game home-stand on Thursday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m. A stream will be available through FloSports.
- The Bearcats finished 2020 at 5-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in AAC play. UC earned a bid in the AAC Championship, topping Memphis 1-0 to move into the championship match where the Bearcats fell 4-0 to South Florida.
- Sophomore Kendall Battle led the Bearcats with two goals on the season. Freshman Lauren Bastian and sophomore Alli Pestaina each had four points on a goal and two assists and seven other Bearcats recorded goals. All three earned All-AAC honors following the season.
- Sophomore Ashley Barron was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year for the conference as well as selected to the AAC First Team.
- Freshman Anna Rexford started all 11 game in-goal, collecting 36 goals with 14 goals against for a 1.25 GAA. She finished with a 5-5-1 record.
- Xavier is 6-23-2 all-time against UC, playing to a 0-0 draw through double overtime in each of the last two match-ups, in 2019 and in 2015.
