Scarlett Hits Career High in Scoring, Musketeers Fall to Friars

The sophomore guard scored a game and career-high 17 points on Tuesday night
CINCINNATI - Sophomore guard Mackayla Scarlett scored a game and career-high 17 points on Tuesday night as the Musketeers dropped a 54-49 BIG EAST matchup vs Providence.
Xavier moved to 6-8 (1-4 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Friars improved to 7-7 (2-3 BIG EAST).
• Xavier jumped out to an early 8-3 lead at the first media timeout (4:47). Providence responded by ending the quarter on a 7-2 run, tying the game at 10-10. Both teams struggled offensively, combining to go 7-for-27 from the floor. Kae Satterfield paced the Musketeers with four points in the opening frame.
• Providence opened the second quarter on a 12-4 run behind 4-for-5 shooting, taking its largest lead of the half, 22-14, with 4:13 on the clock. Xavier responded by ending the frame on a 6-2 run, closing within four points (24-20).
• Mackayla Scarlett led the Musketeers with seven points, while Shaila Beeler added five. Providence held a 24-19 advantage on the glass at the break. Xavier was limited to a .188 field-goal percentage (6-for-32).
• Both teams came out of the locker room with improved shooting percentages as both squads scored 11 points points through the fist five minutes of action. Xavier hit five of its first nine shots of the third quarter. The Musketeers went 6-for-15 from the field in the stanza, outscoring the Friars, 20-17, to close within one point (41-40).
• The teams exchanged baskets in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter before the Musketeers tied the game for a seventh time, 46-46, on a Mackayla Scarlett three pointer with 6:21 left on the clock. Providence responded with a 4-0 run, taking a four-point lead (50-46).
• Xavier scored three straight points to close within one point (50-49) with 1:02 left in regulation, but the Friars pulled away by going 4-for-4 from the foul line down the stretch.
• Mackayla Scarlett scored a game and career-high 17 points on 6-for-17 shooting. She scored seven of her points in the final quarter. The guard added two rebounds and two steals.
• Shaila Beeler added 11 points, four assists and one steal. She was also 7-for-8 from the foul line. She has now scored in double figures six times this season.
• In her first game back since a hand injury (suffered on Nov. 13), Shelby Calhoun posted nine points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes of action off the bench.
• Ayanna Townsend pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with five points. She now has five career games with 10 or more rebounds.
• Kae Satterfield chipped in six rebounds, four points and two blocks. Mikayla Hayes added four rebounds and three steals.
• Xavier had 10 steals vs the Friars, the team's fifth game of the season with double-figure steals.
• The Musketeers were held to a season-low .242 field-goal percentage (15-for-62). Xavier hit 75 percent (15-for-20) of its free-throw attempts.
• Providence won the battle on the glass, 44-39, and had seven more blocks (11-4) than the Musketeers. Xavier held a 14-12 advantage in points off of turnovers.
• Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 at No. 10 UConn. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m. from the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
