Musketeers Fall at No. 10 UConn on Saturday Afternoon

Xavier returns to action on Jan. 21 vs Marquette at Cintas Center
HARTFORD, Conn. - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 78-41 BIG EAST contest at No. 10 UConn on Saturday afternoon at the XL Center.
The Musketeers moved to 6-9 (1-5 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 9-3 (4-0 BIG EAST).
• UConn opened the game on an 11-0 run before a Shelby Calhoun fastbreak layup at the 5:42 mark got the Musketeers on the scoreboard. Nia Clark hit a three pointer with 4:43 on the clock to close within nine points before a jumper by Olivia Nelso-Ododa on the next play gave the Huskies a 16-5 lead at the media timeout (4:21). The Huskies outscored Xavier, 12-8, in the closing minutes of the quarter to take a 28-13 advantage.
• A Mackayla Scarlett basket with 8:53 on the clock in the second quarter made the score 28-15. UConn responded with a 9-2 run, forcing a Xavier timeout at the 5:13 mark. The Huskies closed the half by outscoring Xavier, 11-6, to take a 48-23 advantage.
• Aanaya Harris led Xavier with six points at halftime on 3-for-5 shooting. Nia Clark added five points. Xavier held a 23-22 advantage on the glass with Kae Satterfield pacing the Musketeers with five rebounds.
• UConn scored nine unanswered points to open the second half before the Musketeers went on a 4-0 run, making the score 57-27 with 4:33 left on the clock. The Huskies closed the third quarter on a 5-2 run, taking a 62-29 lead.
• UConn hit 58.3 percent (7-for-12) of its shot attempts in the final frame, outscoring the Musketeers, 16-12, to pull away for the 78-41 victory. Xavier moved to 0-4 all-time vs the Huskies.
• Aanaya Harris and Mikayla Hayes each scored six points in the second half.
• Aanaya Harris led the Musketeers with 12 points, her eighth game in double figures this season. She added two rebounds and an assist.
• Mikayla Hayes added 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting her fifth game in double figures this season. She added four rebounds and a block.
• Kae Satterfield led the team on the glass with six rebounds. She chipped in four points and a team-high four assists.
• UConn won the battle on the glass, 45-40, and held a 28-14 advantage in points off of turnovers. Xavier held a 9-5 advantage in second-chance points. The Musketeers were also 6-for-6 from the foul line.
