Women's Basketball Can't Overcome Slow Start vs Marquette

Kae Satterfield posted a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds on Friday night
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 65-46 contest with Marquette on Friday night at Cintas Center.
Xavier dropped to 6-10 (1-6 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles improved to 12-5 (5-3 BIG EAST).
Marquette score 14 more points (20-6) than Xavier in the opening quarter before the Musketeers outscored the Golden Eagles, 31-28, over the next two frames. Marquette pulled away for the 65-46 victory by outscoring Xavier, 17-9, in the final quarter.
• Marquette hit 54.5 percent (6-for-11) of its shot attempts in the first quarter, outscoring the Musketeers, 20-6. The Golden Eagles forced 10 turnovers in the frame, converting the miscues into 15 points. Xavier was limited to a .333 field-goal percentage (3-for-9) with Kae Satterfield pacing the team with four points on 2-for-2 shooting.
• Xavier opened the second quarter on an 8-4 run capped by a Nia Clark three-point play, closing within 10 points (24-14) with 6:32 on the clock. Marquette responded with four straight points before the Musketeers used a 6-0 run to close within eight points (28-20) and force a Golden Eagle timeout with 1:05 on the clock. The Golden Eagles got a basket down the stretch to take a 30-20 lead into the locker room.
• Kae Satterfield, Mackayla Scarlett and Nia Clark each had six points to pace the Xavier offense. The Musketeers won the battle on the glass, 15-14, with Shelby Calhoun and Kae Satterfield pacing the team with three rebounds each.
• Both teams scored 11 points to open the second half as the Golden Eagles maintained their 10-point lead (41-31) at the media timeout (4:47). Ayanna Townsend scored eight of Xavier's 11 points to start the stanza, going 4-for-5 from the floor. Marquette closed the third quarter by outscoring Xavier, 7-6, taking a 48-37 advantage into the final frame.
• A Kae Satterfield jumper with 5:49 left in regulation got the Musketeers within 10 points (55-45), but Marquette closed the game on a 10-1 run to seal the victory.
• Kae Satterfield recorded a team-high 14 points on 7-for-12 shooting. She added a team-high eight rebounds to go along with two assists. She has 17 career double-figure scoring games.
• Ayanna Townsend added 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting with all 10 points coming in the second half. She added two rebounds. The forward now has 15 career double-figure scoring games.
• Mackayla Scarlett and Aanaya Harris both chipped in eight points. Harris added five rebounds.
• Nia Clark chipped in six points and a team-high five assists. Mikayla Hayes pulled down seven rebounds in 22 minutes of action off the bench.
• The Musketeers won the battle on the glass, 36-26, and scored four more second-chance points (8-4). Marquette outrebounded Xavier by 20 (45-25) in the first meeting this season on Dec. 3.
• Xavier was held below 40 percent shooting (.396) for the eighth time this season and under 50 points for the fourth time. Marquette has now won 12 straight over the Musketeers.
• Turnovers proved costly for the Musketeers as the Golden Eagles turned 22 miscues into 25 points.
• Xavier returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 23 vs DePaul. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. with the game being aired nationally on CBS Sports Network.
