Women's Soccer Advances in NCAA Championship with 4-1 Double OT Win at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After No. 22 Tennessee struck first, Xavier women's soccer scored four unanswered goals to advance in the NCAA Championship with a 4-1 victory over the Volunteers on Friday evening. Xavier moves to 14-3-5 on the season and will now play in the NCAA Championship Second Round for the second time in program history.
In the first 25 minutes of the match, each team had one look, with Maria Galley saving UT's look on-frame and Chloe Netzel's shot going missing just outside the post. The Volunteers found the back of the net first, shooting from the edge of the box to take a 1-0 lead.
Emma Flick entered the match shortly after the Tennessee goal and put immediate pressure on the Tennessee defense, getting four first-half shots in 25 minutes of action, but Ella Rogers' shot in the 36th minute, from Simone Rivard-Roberts, was the look that found the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1, which held into halftime.
In the second half, Xavier had a 7-3 advantage on shots, but neither team found the back of the net to send the game to two 10-minute overtime periods.
Four minutes into the first overtime period, Natalie Bain drove past the UT defense and found Chloe Netzel on the left side, where she shot for the eventual game-winner. Xavier took the 2-1 lead into the second overtime period, where Molly McLaughlin added an insurance goal in the 103 minute. Sonia Vargas scored as time expired to set the final score at 4-1.
Xavier now advances to face the winner of the match between No. 3 seeded Virginia and Fairleigh Dickinson in the second round. The Cavaliers and the Knights will face off on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

- Molly McLaughlin's goal was her team-high seventh of the season. She also has four assists, giving her 18 points, also a team-high. This is her second NCAA tournament goal of her career, also scoring the game-winner against Virginia Tech in 2019.
- Chloe Netzel's goal was her sixth of the season, combined with an assist for 13 points. It was also her third game-winner.
- Ella Rogers' goal was her second of the season. Combined with five assists, she has nine points.
- Sonia Vargas' overtime goal was her first of the season, making her the 12th Musketeer to score a goal in 2022.
- Simone Rivard-Roberts picked up an assist on Rogers' goal, her first of the season, to give her five points on two goals and an assist.
- Natalie Bain got the assist on Chloe Netzel's game-winner, her second of the season to go with a pair of goals for six points.
- Maddie Reed, Natalie Bain and Molly McLaughlin played the full 110 minutes, holding the Volunteers scoreless for the final 90 minutes of play. Elise Le played over 85 minutes as well.
- Maria Galley collected six saves in-goal to pick up her 15th win of her freshman season.
- Xavier's win over Tennessee is the program's second NCAA Championship win. The other, also during head coach Nate Lie's tenure, was in 2019 over Virginia Tech.
