Musketeers back in action on Tuesday at NKU

SURPRISE, Az. - Xavier baseball closed the book on their series against Oregon State. After falling behind 0-4, Luke Franzoni hit a three-run homer to pull Xavier within one in the 8th, but the Beavers scratched a run across in the bottom half. Xavier couldn't score the tying run from third, dropping the game by a score of 4-5.

Oregon State was again quick to score in this one, getting runs in the first and third inning. They chased starter George Eisenhardt in the 5th after a two-put rally saw two more scores, and the Beavers held on to the 4-0 lead until late in the game. Matthew DePrey and Jerry Huntzinger led off the 8th with back to back singles, and Luke Franzoni blasted one to straight away center to score them all and bring the Musketeers within one, 3-4. In the bottom half, Oregon state was able to score off a passed ball to secure an all-important insurance one.

After back-to-back singles again in the 9th, a sac bunt and a sac fly saw Xavier back within a run with a runner on third, but Huntzinger, who already had three hits in the game, wasn't able to notch a fourth, shutting the door on the comeback attempt.

On deck, Xavier will play at Northern Kentucky this Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm ET from Highland Heights.

XU AT THE PLATE

Leadoff hitter Jerry Huntzinger paced the offense by going 3-5 including a double to start off the game. He also scored on Franzoni's home run.
Luke Franzoni only had one hit, but it was a monster three-run homer to shift the momentum toward the Musketeers late in the game.
Eddie Rivero went 2-4 on the afternoon including a crucial 9th inning single to keep Xavier fighting. He was ultimately left on third as the final strike was called.
Matthew DePrey was 1-3 with a sac fly RBI in the 9th to bring Xavier back within one,
Lane Flamm was 1-4 at the plate with a run scored on DePrey's sac fly, and Jack Housinger also went 1-4.

XU ON THE MOUND

Freshman George Eisenhardt started the game and pitched 4.2 innings giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out two. Most of the damage came with two outs in the fourth as his pitch count climbed.
Luke Bell came in relief to settle the Musketeers and held Oregon State scoreless for two innings, as he struck out for and only allowed two hits.
Jack Lynch came in with two outs in the 7th and struck out the only batter he faced.
Lane Flamm moved from DH to the mound for the 8th, and he struck out two of the four batters he faced, but unfortunately a passed ball allowed the game-deciding run to score.
